Police hope to find clues in computer records

Hood River, Ore. - Police are checking the computer records of a missing Hood River woman to see if her Internet use may have somehow led to her disappearance.
Friends say 48-year-old Kim Forbes had been known to chat with people online, which is how she met her most recently known boyfriend a couple of years ago.

Police say that relationship ended amicably and the boyfriend has a solid alibi for the weekend that Forbes disappeared.

Forbes was last seen by her teenage daughter at their home in Hood River two weeks ago.

According to those who know the woman, Forbes is very reliable and was in good spirits before her disappearance.

Police are perplexed by the disappearance as well.

"There isn't anything to indicate that it (her disappearance) is intentional," said Chief Deputy Dwayne Troxel with the Hood River Sheriff's Office. "It would have to be pretty elaborate - I mean, months of preparation. But there is no credit card activity and no checking account activity."

Forbes' vehicle is also missing - a dark red 2000 Ford Explorer with Oregon license plate number XTB 679. The trailer hitch has a silhouette of a pig on it.

As for Forbes, she is described as 5 feet, 9 inches tall, weighs 200 pounds and has blue eyes with brown hair and some graying.

Anyone who has information about Forbes or her vehicle is urged to call the Hood River County Sheriff's Office at (541) 386-2711.

THE DALLES -- Police have found the car of a Hood River woman missing since Halloween, but there still is no sign of Kimberly Forbes herself.

Her red Ford Explorer was found Friday in the parking lot of a Mexican restaurant in Gresham, the Hood River County sheriff's office said.

Police said that it apparently had been there since early November but was discovered only when the restaurant's owner called a tow truck to have the vehicle removed.

Forbes, 48, vanished Oct. 31 from her home near Hood River. The Columbia River Bank employee had been scheduled to have breakfast with a friend in Hood River, then leave for Portland on a shopping trip.

Hood River Sheriff Joseph Wampler also said the vehicle appeared to have been broken into recently -- well after it was parked at the scene.

"At this particular time, nothing stands out as to what has happened to Kim Forbes or where she may be," Wampler said.

Police have been trying to determine whether Forbes' disappearance could be linked to her Internet use. Investigators think it is possible that Forbes made contact with someone via the Internet who is connected to her departure.

Police say neither Forbes' cell phone or credit cards have been used since her disappearance.

Kim Forbes spoke with her adult daughter Oct. 30. She said she planned to meet a friend for breakfast the next morning and then go shopping in Portland. She never arrived for breakfast.

A few weeks later, police discovered Forbes' Ford Explorer was found in a vacant lot next to a Gresham, Ore., restaurant.

A year later, friends say they're doing the best they can to cope with Forbes' disappearance.

"We just keep busy and just go on, that's all we can do -- hope for the best and wish we had an answer," C. J. Woodard told KOIN News 6.

She told her teenage daughter she planned to breakfast the next morning, October 31, with a friend who lived three miles away on Wasco Street, then go shopping alone in Portland, Oregon afterwards for flannel sheets and other winter necessities. She never kept her appointment with her friend and has never been heard from again.

Forbes's burgundy 2000 Ford Explorer SUV with the Oregon license plates number XTB679 vanished with her. The vehicle has a trailer hitch with the silhouette of a pig on it.

On November 19, over two weeks after Forbes vanished, the SUV was found abandoned in the parking lot of Don Pedro's Mexican Food in the vicinity of the 18800 block of southeast Stark Street in Gresham, Oregon, fifty-fives miles from her home.

Its rear passenger window was broken and there was no sign of Forbes at the scene, but women's clothing and fast food containers were found inside and outside the vehicle, and credit card receipts were also found. The driver's seat was pushed back farther than was necessary for a driver of Forbes's height.

A photograph of the vehicle is posted with this case summary. Investigators believe it was broken into after it was parked at the scene. Witnesses stated that it had been in the parking lot since at least November 5.

Fingerprints found inside the SUV were matched to a Gresham, Oregon man who was questioned by police. He was said to be cooperative with the investigation.

He admitted to breaking into Forbes's car while it was in the restaurant parking lot and stealing some items from it, but he denied having anything to do with her disappearance and said it appeared as if the vehicle had been broken into before he found it. The man agreed to take a polygraph in connection with Forbes's case. Investigators do not believe he was involved in her disappearance.

Authorities searched Forbes's computer after her disappearance for clues. She has had many online relationships and had met at least one previous boyfriend online. Nothing of interest was found on her computer hard drive, however.

Forbes is described as a reliable, very punctual person who would be unlikely to leave without warning. She was employed as a teller at the Columbia River Bank in The Dalles, Oregon and was scheduled for work on November 1, but did not arrive.

Forbes was in good spirits at the time she was last seen. There has been no activity on her bank accounts or credit cards since she vanished, and her cellular phone has stayed turned off.

Forbes did not normally visit Portland alone; she preferred to take friends with her, but all of them were busy on the day she planned to go shopping. Her loved ones believe she met with foul play, possibly a carjacking. They stated that she would have defended herself if someone attacked her.

Police do not believe Forbes left of her own accord; they too suspect foul play in her disappearance. Her case remains unsolved.

A “people search” of public records shows that Kimberly lived at 1625 Jeanette Rd in Hood River.

It’s fairly secluded and there are outbuildings where someone could lie in wait. So it’s more than likely IMO that she was abducted from her own property and the car was dumped where it was found.

Margaret Strasser told KOIN 6 News that before the trees grew tall on Jeanette Road she was able to see Kim Forbes’ house from her window.

“She was a very nice lady,” Strasser said. “When I saw her, she was always kind of laughing. A nice person to be around.”

Their families knew each other well.

“When her mom was working in the packing house, mother baby sat the 2 kids. She had a brother as well,” Strasser said.

Kim’s home had a beautiful backdrop of Mount Adams in her yard. But her small house was the last place anyone saw her before she vanished.

Keyes whereabouts on October 21 2004 show his cell phone traveling south-east from Neah Bay, WA with it pinging later that afternoon in University Place, Tacoma, and than a final time in Kent, WA. His records are blank until January 10. Hood River is 60 miles from Keyes family land in Maupin, OR and en-route between Neah Bay and Corvallis, OR. Keyes admitted to returning to that land multiple times when living in Neah Bay. Keyes was also said to have frequented a bar in Troutdale, OR. This bar is four miles from where Kimberly's car was found. Keyes admitted to the FBI that he would move cars long distances to throw off investigators. Kimberly's car was found abandoned 55 miles from where she was last seen.

There was some back and forth on the thread about Hood River not being en route from between Neah Bay and Corvallis (later corrected to Colville, also wrong) which is true. The poster does not know the area. But Hood River is en route to Maupin from Neah Bay. However, it was indicated that there were other factors that would have made Kimberly and unlikely victim. I just thought I’d throw this out there, since I’ve noticed that unsolved cases are sometimes attributed to Israel Keyes. JMO

Thanks for resurfacing with this information. I live in this area and in fact grew up in Maupin myself. The fact that Keyes was that close during the period of several months around the disappearance holds a lot of potential, as there was little to gain from the carjacking other than some transportation or money, and nothing was taken from her bank account following her disappearance. Thinking about it from that angle now does make the MO seem more likely to be of a more aimlessly sadistic nature like that of Keyes.

I think a notable element here is there was no mention of DNA in the car, or that the car looked cleaned in any manner, nor any blood spatter in the car. So like was mentioned it seemed likely that the initial encounter began probably outside of her home at an opportune place and time for the perpetrator. I think perhaps she was driven alive to one of the many remote locations between Hood River and Gresham, and likely killed and hidden nearby where she died, or perhaps even taken to a river or body of water.

I agree that she was likely taken somewhere and killed. The Larch Mountain area occurred to me, only familiar to me because that was where Whitney Heichel’s body was found and it’s not terribly far from Gresham. Whitney’s vehicle showed signs of contact with mud IIRC. I re-watched the KOIN video (post #16) of Kimberly’s vehicle about to be towed and the outside looked really clean. I wonder if it had been “detailed” by Kimberly’s abductor inside and out before being left in Gresham. The fingerprints found came from someone who broke into her vehicle where it was left.
