From NBC10:
"During an interview after he was captured, the boy told detectives that he got the gun while cleaning and organizing his father’s safe. The teen accessed the safe while replacing the batteries that his dad had removed, making the safe’s combination lock inoperable, according to the criminal complaint."

I looked this up and there are plenty of sources, some from manufacturers, that tell how to access a digital safe that has a weak or dead (or removed) battery. Maybe a digital safe isn't very safe at all.
MOO

From link below:
...He was denied bail on several adult charges, including criminal homicide, and sent to a juvenile detention center, police said in a statement...

...Cooper is next scheduled to appear in court on December 7th, according to the Bucks County District Attorney’s Office...

Here's a bit of an update:

Published Mar 6, 2023

"The full circumstances surrounding the 13-year-old victim's death remained unclear Monday, after Joshua Cooper broke down during his preliminary hearing."

"But after just two witnesses in what promised to be the first public accounting of the circumstances surrounding the victim’s death, Cooper’s attorney, Paul Lang, asked Magisterial District Judge Michael Gallagher to end the hearing.

Cooper ultimately waived the proceeding, sending the charges up to the county court in Doylestown. Afterward, Lang declined to discuss what led Cooper to change his mind about having the hearing."

"When officers arrived at Cooper’s trailer, they spotted him running from the scene, toward a wooded area nearby. Inside the trailer’s small, cramped bathroom, officers found the 13-year-old victim. She was lying facedown, shot once in the back. Police have declined to identify the victim, prosecutors said, at the request of her family.

A pile of blood-soaked towels were next to the body, as were bottles of beach and other household cleaners, the officers testified Monday. It appeared, they said, that someone had attempted to clean up the scene.

Bullet holes in the home made it seem to the officers that the shot that killed the girl had been fired inside the trailer and traveled outside. Investigators later found a bullet lodged in the exterior wall of another trailer nearby."

Update: Pleaded guilty, sentenced to 15 to 40 years.
Ash Cooper, formerly known as Joshua Cooper, pleaded guilty on Thursday to third-degree murder, possession of an instrument of crime and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence in connection to the November 2022 killing of 12-year-old Morgan Connors.

Cooper, 18, was sentenced to 15 to 40 years in state prison and a consecutive sentence of seven years of probation. He was also ordered to follow all the rules and recommendations of adult probation and parole and undergo psychological and psychiatric evaluations.

"Ash's plea marks the initial but not the ultimate phase in her journey to redemption," Lang said. "As her lawyer, I am pleased that my defense contributed to securing a favorable sentence for her, one that notably prevented life in prison."

Shortly after 4 p.m. on November 25, 2022, the Bensalem Township Police Department received a 911 call about a possible murder at the Top of the Ridge Trailer Park on Gibson Road in Bensalem, a township located roughly 20 miles from Philadelphia. Prosecutors said that a "juvenile witness" was on an Instagramvideo chat with an acquaintance, later identified as Cooper, who claimed to have just killed someone.

"In the video chat, Cooper flipped the video image and showed the legs and feet of someone covered in blood," the district attorney's office said. "Cooper then asked the acquaintance for assistance with cleaning up the scene and disposing of the body."
