Possible lead in Susan Powell case, 8-18-11

I wonder if something is happening. It's been 22 minutes since Ben Winslow has tweeted anything and 28 minutes for Jennifer Stagg. They've been pretty up to date all day long. Gosh, I'm a nervous wreck!

I can't think that they'd honestly let media play tagalong with LE unless they had something firm. Why make themselves look like total goofballs? There must be fire to go along with the smoke, it's just not all out there now for us to see.

I totally agree.
They really have been working this case and doing searches that were never reported. This one is different for a reason.

I could only find 3 ... the two that were issued to search the Powell home and van, and one issued for biological samples from JP. I am assuming the search warrants could be old...not necessarily recent.

My guess is a search warrant in the past (not sure how long ago) items were submitted to a lab and preserved but maybe something new came up to where they found a new method to test, and were able to pinpoint the location of where she might be. Maybe rugs in father's or JP home had dirt, shoes had dirt, tire had dirt and the testing took years, maybe they gathered samples from many places and once they gathered samples from this area it was a hit.

There'd have to be something besides the soil, because they'd have to have a location *before* they tested the soil for a match. Ely's soil is going to be much different than that around the Bingham Copper Mine; similar mining, similar dirt.

I'm wondering if it's a newer search warrant.
Is it possible someone accompanied Josh on the rental car run?
Did Josh have a special friend, who was holding information?

I have a feeling that the LE saying that he needed to change his clothes several time during the presser was some sort of red herring. Plus, he made a comment that he'd change his clothes but his face would not change. JMHO.

I know JP had on a blue shirt in the interview, but didn't look to find the other with him standing by the pond. Did he have on tan pants? This was what Mike was changing into. ??

ETA: He also kept saying they wanted to involve the press...I think they are utilizing it as best they can. I've seen it done before.

They didn't invite a news crew to the site when they found Brooke... and they certainly didn't invite them to come alone on their search!
Brooke's family was there however to say goodbye at the scene. It WAS secretive, this is not secretive. This is publicized like a movie premier!

The defense couldn't claim that LE planted the bones.
If they have firm evidence, I think it's brilliant.

Defense Attorney: This is so obviously planted evidence. WHAT law enforcement agency takes the media on a search? Contaminating evidence, possibly video taping a body or leaking that it was found before family is notified... it is so obvious that they wanted it video taped when the bones were found... so that they couldn't be accused of planting them. Yet, they admitted themselves they had been out here before!

If Geraldo goes to Nevada or Washington that's totally cool.

HLN has reported on the Susan Powell search during the last couple of hours, but they have no additional information beyond what I've read on this thread. Nothing on my local news sources (Detroit), but they send emails with breaking news - sometimes before I hear it on HLN/CNN.

I would hope that LE prepped them a little? Surely they would have mentioned the terrain was going to be rough and to wear the right footwear?

From what I gather, the media were told to come to a press conference and then told to follow searchers. I don't think they knew they would be traipsing along in rugged terrain today and if there is something newsworthy, they don't want to be the one reporter who lost the story while they went and got a better pair of shoes.

Maybe I'm an idiot, but wasn't it snowing when she went missing? He also drove for miles, so I don't see how dirt samples could match... It seems it would be a mixture of dirty ice and various types of "dirt"

Unless they are total Keystone cops, I cannot imagine them taking media out on a search due to a credible lead. They search on their own and then announce results.

Unless after all the bad press... they just want everyone to know just how hard they are really working to find Susan.
I am starting to have a sinking feeling this is like the river search with Haleigh... or the barrel with Stacy... I'm not getting my hopes up.

This is just.... absurd... illogical... ridiculous... irrational... unprecedented... I don't understand.

The sergeant attributed the lack of additional information to a court-ordered "secrecy order" and invited members of the media to join him and four police detectives on several searches in areas outside of town.

The White Pines County Sheriff's Office and members of the Bureau of Land Management were assisting in the searches.

Well over a dozen reporters and photographers were accompanying the searchers.
