Two Divorces, a Girlfriend

Shacknai has three children with his first two wives; Max's mother is Shacknai's second wife, Dina Romano, whom Shacknai divorced in 2008 shortly before he started dating Nalepa, an ophthalmic technician at Horizon Eye Specialists & Lasik Center in Scottsdale, Ariz.

As Nalepa's relationship with Shacknai grew more serious, she quit her job in December to spend more time with Shacknai and his children, including his youngest, Max, according to reports from her former boss, Michael Trier.

Few details of Max's death have been released, other than he fell down the stairs and wasn't breathing at his home while Nalepa was on the property and paramedics were unable to save him with CPR. He was buried on Wednesday.

But there came a twist when Nalepa's body was discovered two days later by her boyfriend's brother, Adam Shacknai, who was staying in the guesthouse and was the only person home at the time of what officers called "a very violent and very suspicious" death.

Adam had called 911 and told police he cut Nalepa down and tried to save her. Adam is a "prime witness" who has been "very cooperative," Frank says, adding that he has since left California.

Mansion Deaths Put Spotlight on Past Accusations of Violence By Jonah Shacknai

By CHRISTINA CARON and SCOTT SHULMAN
CORONADO, Calif. July 21, 2011

The investigation into two deaths at the historic Spreckels Mansion has put a spotlight on the turbulent marriage of the mansion's owner Jonah Shacknai and the accusations of violence that surrounded the marriage.
Shacknai, the millionaire owner of a pharmaceutical company, recently lost his 6-year-old son Max who died Sunday of injuries suffered when he fell down the stairs at the mansion last week. His girlfriend Rebecca Zahau was found at the mansion last Wednesday with her hands bound behind her back, her ankles tied together, and a rope around her neck.

Lawyer requests further investigation into mansion death

9-4-2011

SAN DIEGO - San Diego County Sheriff's detectives missed a key piece of crime-solving evidence when investigating the death of Rebecca Zahau at the Spreckles Mansion in Coronado, according to the Zahau family's attorney.

"I asked them about a psychological autopsy and the detectives said they thought about it, but decided not to do it," Anne Bremner told FOX 5 News Sunday.

Forensic psychiatrist Dr. Steven Ornish said a forensic or psychological autopsy is standard practice when there is controversy regarding the manner of death in a case.

Detectives: Zahau Calm, Not Despondent

November 4, 2011

Coronado detectives told Sheriff's investigators after Rebecca Zahau died that she didn't feel responsible for grave injuries suffered by her boyfriend's son or show any signs of depression in the aftermath of his accident.

The statements, revealed in investigative files being reviewed by an attorney hired by the Zahau family, were made by detectives on July 19. They had accompanied Zahau to the hospital after Max Shacknai, 6, fell and suffered the head injuries that would ultimately kill him.

Spreckels mansion owner described as go-getter

July 16, 2011

“Jonah is very much the blood that runs through Medicis,” said Gary Nachman, a Wall Street analyst with the Susquehanna International Group. “They are a very meaningful player in the dermatology market.”

What impact will the mansion death have on Shacknai’s business?

“That’s the billion-dollar question right now,” Nachman said.

He and others believe the answer hinges in part on what role, if any, Shacknai played in the incident.

Like many people with influence and money, Shacknai — a broad-shouldered, smooth-faced, square-jawed figure — has managed to collect both friends and enemies over the years. Within Arizona’s business scene, he is widely seen as a go-getter.

“He’s very active and very engaged,” said Joan Koerber-Walker, president and CEO of the Arizona BioIndustry Association. “He’s considered one of the community’s leaders.”

He is also known for his charity, including his work with a ranch that helps children with special needs. He has two teenage children, in addition to Max.

Rebecca was a certified ophthalmic technician at Horizon Eye Specialists & Lasik Center in Scottsdale.

July 16, 2011

Zahau, who was still legally married to Neil Nalepa, was working as a certified ophthalmic technician at Horizon Eye Specialists & Lasik Center in Scottsdale. She was considered a consummate professional who was serious about her career, said her former boss, Horizon chief executive Michael Trier.

“Rebecca was a very experienced and skilled technician who was well-respected by our doctors, her co-workers and our patients,” Trier said.

MEDICIS MAN

October 2008

FENG SHUI–LOVING CEO JONAH SHACKNAI’S GROUNDBREAKING DRUG COMPANY IS CHANGING THE WAY WE AGE.

After mastering the face and the body, will the spirit be next? Shacknai, who exercises daily and doesn’t eat meat, owns up to a fascination with feng shui. He enlisted feng shui practitioner Brayden Zeviar to help with Medicis’s new, 150,000-square-foot headquarters, which sits on the western edge of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community reservation. Zeviar did everything from surveying the land for the new office space (and placing replicas of ancient Chinese coins in the foundation to promote wealth) to installing streams, an aquarium and statues of Asian wise men around the property. “This was greeted with great skepticism when I first introduced it,” says Shacknai. “But now almost every employee has feng shui elements in their particular workstations.”

Scottsdale tycoon opens up about deaths of son, girlfriend

Posted: Aug 09, 2011 12:21 AM CDT

Shacknai did not specifically mention the unimaginable string of events that unfolded last month at his Coronado mansion.

"We've obviously had an extraordinarily difficult time. We have undertaken some tragedies, some losses that one couldn't imagine experiencing in a lifetime," he said.

Shacknai Discusses Deaths of Loved Ones During Earnings Call

He sounded composed and on point as he opened the 2:15 p.m. call about his Scottsdale, AZ-based company Medicis (NYSE:MRX) by devoting a little less than three minutes to the much publicized deaths of his son Max, 6, and girlfriend, Rebecca Zahau, 32.

Here's the text of Shacknai's personal remarks during Monday's call:

Before I begin our discussion today, I want to express a personal note of appreciation. So many of our shareholders, as with our customers and employees, have provided me and our family wonderful encouragement and support. We've obviously had an extraordinarily difficult time. We have undertaken some tragedies, some losses, that one couldn't imagine experiencing in a lifetime, and the communications and emails, the notes of condolence, the warm wishes, the contributions to the Whispering Hope Ranch Foundation, that have been expressed both directly and through our investor relations team, are highly appreciated. I can't thank you enough for those and they are so meaningful.

This article contains a pics of the door with the painted message (whited out) still on the hinges in place. Article also makes mention of a "lengthy journal" found on her phone.

According to Zahau's ex-husband, Neil Nalepa, it read: 'She saved him, can he save her.'

Ms Zahau was Jonah Shacknai's girlfriend of two years

Investigators discovered a lengthy 'journal' stored in her phone that also indicated she was unhappy.

TV reenactment questions Rebecca Zahau suicide finding

November 4, 2011

Two months after the San Diego County Sheriff's Department announced that the violent death of Rebecca Zahau at the Coronado, CA home she shared with pharmaceutical executive Jonah Shacknai was officially being ruled a suicide, David Gotfredson, a Field Producer with KFMB-TV, created a reenactment of that tragedy challenging the police findings.

Among those experts is Dr. Maurice Godwin, Ph.D., an investigative psychologist, forensic and trial consultant, and former North Carolina police officer, with an impressive resume of publications, case work, and teaching credentials.

Dr. Godwin worked for the Zahau family looking into various elements of this case from September 4th until October 23rd, 2011.

His analysis also focused on movement of the queen-size bed in Ms. Zahau's bedroom, with particular attention to its lack of effect upon the plush carpeting on which the bed stood.

As Dr. Godwin observed, "If the victim's body weight pulled on the bed we would expect to find a drag or brush pattern across the carpet going from left to upper right. However, no drag or brush pattern is visible. Most of the carpet pile in the photograph appears to be brushed to the left away from the bed leg or undisturbed."

Rebecca Zahau's Death a Ritualistic Killing?

Sept. 7, 2011

"This death has many hallmarks of a ritualistic killing," he said. "I think someone assaulted her physically. I think she was dazed, and they bound her."

According to both Kobilinsky and Godwin, the injuries as described in the autopsy report suggest "a substantial blow to the head."

"There are four hemorrhages in four different positions," Kobilinsky said. "When you see these kinds of scalp hemorrhages you have to explain them."

Godwin concurred, adding, "The chances of bumping into the railing, going over the balcony and hitting your head four times is highly unlikely."

Shacknai Still Owns Spreckels Mansion

March 7, 2012

When Realtor Scott Aurich went before a city commission Wednesday to pitch restoration plans for the Spreckels mansion, the chairman, Jon Ryan asked an unusual question – “Who is the applicant?”

Aurich acknowleged that person is Jonah Shacknai, despite the announcement in October that he had sold the residence.

He had, but due to a prolonged escrow process, Shacknai, owner of the Arizona pharmaceuticals firm Medicis, still holds sway over the mansion, though a deal remains in place to transfer title to an investment group, 1043 Ocean Blvd. LLC.

Aurich told the commission Coronado resident Joe Pinsonneault, a developer, is among the group members.

Spreckels Mansion Sold to Investors

Monday, Oct 31, 2011

Pharmaceutical company executive Jonah Shacknai approached Aurich earlier this month and asked him to find someone to buy the Coronado home located at 1043 Ocean Blvd. The deal for the 12,750 sq. ft. mansion was finalized this weekend.

The group who purchased the Spreckels mansion has one local investor, who Aurich would not disclose. He also would not identify the total number of investors or the amount investors paid for the mansion.
