Remains Discovered
On Monday March 4, 2024, at approximately 12:17 PM Waterloo Police Officers were made aware of possible human remains located at the Waterloo Waste Treatment Plant located in at 2550 Kenyon Ave. Waterloo Patrol Officers arrived and were directed into an area, where they were discovered. Waterloo Police Detectives and Lab personnel were called into assist. The remains will be taken to the Iowa Medical Examiner’s office for identification and a cause of death. This is an active case and if you have any information you are asked to contact the Waterloo Police Detective Division. 319-291-4340 #3 or Cedar Valley Crime Stoppers 855-300-TIPS.

The location where the remains were found is a short distance from the Riverview Recreation Area, where a Waterloo man disappeared in 2021.
Darrin Russell Lenton placed his last cell phone calls from the area, which is adjacent to the Cedar River and includes Harold Getty Lake, on July 3, 2021. Lenton was 49 when he disappeared.

The remains found in Waterloo, Iowa on Monday have been positively identified as 52-year-old Darrin Lenton, who had been reported missing on July 10, 2021.

1) Phone calls from his phone in the area. That suggest he wasn't killed somewhere else and disposed of at that location.
2) No reports of him being with others at this location.

Could be, but I doubt that will be able to be determined what the cause or manner of death is due to the conditions of the remain when found.
If there was any past history of depression or other mental health issues it may help to determine if this could have been self harm. It has been reported no foul play is suspected. Will be interesting to see what the ME has to say, if that is reported.
