JACKSON, MS - The FBI says no federal murder charge has been filed against the man accused of abducting a Johns Island child earlier this week.

Lawton Thomas Evans is scheduled to appear in federal court for the first time Friday afternoon at approximately 1:30 p.m. in Jackson, Mississippi, according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Nathan Williams.

Evans is charged with kidnapping involving a person under the age of 18 and will be arraigned in federal court, authorities say.

He is then expected to be taken back to Charleston.
A federal murder charge was also listed for Evans, according to Madison County, Mississippi jail records, but FBI spokesman Don Wood said there is no murder charge.

It is currently 12:45 in Jackson, MS. So about 45 minutes until TLE's court appearance.

I apologize if I missed this but I had not seen it before. It makes me concerned that BT assault may have been more than just physical. I hope not. My heart breaks for this family.

Documents on Evans' history in and out of prison depicted increasing misbehavior over the past two decades.

“He was arrested in 2000 on a charge of second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor after police said he assaulted a 15-year-old girl. He was 19. He pleaded guilty to a lesser assault charge, avoiding a requirement to register as a sex offender.“

I wonder if the charge was supposed to be "Attempted Murder" for how severely he beat up HT's mom?

I keep thinking about dad. He must be so overwhelmed since this all happened. His wife, little girl and his other babies. Poor guy will never want to leave for work again. :( I hope they have a really good support system with their loved ones. I also hope dads job allows some time off to heal with his family.

And I hope mom recovers quickly and they find the cat too!

I wish we would hear how mom is doing and when H will come back home, or is she already?

NEW: In court today... Thomas Evans said he suffered from mental problems as a child but as an adult he couldn’t afford to see a doctor to get treatment. He said he was treated for drugs and alcohol in prison and just released 14 days ago.

Wow.

Does anyone know what the tattoo on his upper chest says?

Wow.

Amazing how some people are "clever" and "resourceful" enough to have the ability to locate & size up victims, attain a knife, brutally attack a woman with small children, take one kid, ditch a car, steal another car and cross state lines and run from police in the process, all the while toting a toddler with them, yet a trip to the local health department or human services is too difficult.

But what if the person then breaks in because they think no one is there?!

Just a thought but here's what I, ( the Queen of Paranoia ) am prepared to do if that happens to me when I am home alone.

On my cell phone clock timer, there are many sound options from which to choose when the timer is up. I have selected 'bark' which is the sound of a ( loud ) real dog, barking. The 'bark' keeps repeating until I silence it.

Since I never open the door to a stranger when I'm home alone, I have the timer pre-set and paused at 10 seconds. If there is a knock on the door I am ready to set off the sound of my 'barking dog' from inside the closed door.

I've tested it too, while standing outside my closed door, and I can hear my 'barking dog' very clearly!

Since I don't have a dog, I'm hoping the barking would make an intruder think twice before breaking in...

As I said, I'm just a bit paranoid...

Random - that is scary. I don’t have 5 kids, but I’ve been in her exact circumstance of coming home with kids in tow. I’m reminded to always be aware of your surroundings. Didn’t the police say there was no threat to the neighborhood and that it’s still safe? Lip service? Was that based on something they knew? So confused.

I now believe that statement was made because BT card had been used in another state and they felt that the immediate threat to the community wasn’t still there (but in another state).

Solicitor Scarlett A. Wilson shared 9th Judicial Circuit Solicitor's Office's post.

One more thing. To be crystal clear: there is NO CONNECTION between the victims in this matter and the alleged defendant. They were randomly targeted.

I am so glad the Solicitor made it crystal clear that H and her family had no connection to this creep. I never got any feelings this man was connected to this family in any way.

But it is very frightening to know it was a random target because that means it could happen to anyone. We are seeing more and more strangers targeting victims they did not know. :(

I am just so happy that H was found alive. I hope her mom continues to recover so she can fully enjoy being with H again.
