Paul Baker walked away from his Beaufort, South Carolina home on March 5, 1987 and hasn’t been seen since. He would be 35 now. No one was ever charged in the disappearance, but the Island Packet reports police suspected Baker’s father and step-mother. His step-mother was later convicted in the disappearance of a baby in Florida and sentenced to 25 years in prison in 2009.

At least 81 kids in the Carolinas have been missing for more than a year

Does anyone have the exact address he disappeared from? I live in the exact neighborhood he went missing from in houses built in the 70s

also, she claims he was buried in a neighbors yard. The area is very marshy - even today. Back then it would’ve also been wooded and with dirt roads. The woods are almost all gone, save for a few spots but the marshes remain. He could be close

there was also human remains found in the marsh today. Probably unrelated, but gives one pause

This case really surprised me. Two children almost abandoned and terrible treatment by their parents and their stepmother, who is one of the worst women I've ever seen... an unhappy cursed woman who should never have been born and do so much damage in this life... the little action of Paul's mother, so left and not strong enough to fight for her son... lousy mother... at least it makes me happy that little Nina is very happily married with her own children... I hope James and susan rot in hell the worst scum I've seen so far...

On March 5, 1987, 3-year-old Paul Baker was reported missing from his Shell Point residence by his step-mother, Susan Baker.

She advised deputies that he must have wandered from the residence, while she was under the influence of alcohol/drugs and taking a nap.

Susan Baker’s story was highly suspicious and during the investigation it was learned Paul Baker and his 6-year-old sister were physically abused by her on a regular basis. Ultimately, Susan Baker was charged with the assaults on Baker’s 6-year-old sister and convicted.

There have been reports on the whereabouts of Paul Baker over the years, but none have revealed his remains. Susan Baker and James Baker, the biological father of Paul Baker, eventually moved to Chipley, Florida, where in 2000 a cold case investigation led to charges on both Susan and James Baker for neglect in the disappearance of Paul Baker.

They were extradited to Beaufort County, where the charges were later dismissed. They both returned to Florida. In 2009, a 7-month-old infant was abducted and Florida authorities identified Susan Baker as a likely suspect. The infant was found alive five days later, after being hidden in a box under a bed by Susan Baker. She was charged, convicted and is currently serving time for the infant’s abduction.

Susan Baker remains the person of interest in Paul Baker’s disappearance.
