A surveying crew found what could be human remains Tuesday morning. The crew members were working at White and River roads in Piedmont when they made the discovery about 10:40 a.m. The Anderson County Sheriff's Office is investigating.

“Remains found Tuesday in a heavily wooded area in Piedmont are believed to be those of a man who has been missing since October 2018, said Anderson County Coroner Greg Shore.

Anderson County Coroner Greg Shore said the remains are believed to be those of 53-year-old Donald Wayne Rhodes who vanished last year but whose disappearance was never reported to law enforcement officials.

Shore spoke exclusively with the Independent Mail and The Greenville News late Tuesday afternoon. He said the man, later identified as Rhodes, died by suicide as the result of a gunshot wound to the head. His remains were found just a few hundred yards from the now-defunct mobile home park where he once lived, Shore said.

Nearby was a gun and ID card and some remnants of alcohol, Shore said.

‘His roommate said he just disappeared,’ Shore said. ‘And his family said he missed a family reunion a few months later, but no one reported him missing. He was going through a divorce and struggling with depression and had become a bit estranged from his family.’
