Ms O’Connor was presented with the inaugural award for Classic Irish Album at the RTÉ Choice Music Awards earlier this year.

The singer received a standing ovation as she dedicated the award, for I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got, to “each and every member of Ireland’s refugee community”.

Irish singer Sinead O’Connor has died at the age of 56.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time,” the singer’s family said in a statement to The Irish Times and the BBC.

The controversial artist rose to fame with her 1990 rendition of the Prince song “Nothing Compares 2 U,” which peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 that same year.

Her death comes one year after her 17-year-old son, Shane O’Connor, died of an apparent suicide. She announced his passing in January 2022...

Rest in gentle peace, Sinead !
Thank you for sharing your talent and powerful, beautiful voice with us.

Too young to leave us, but I hope the first person she saw after passing was her beloved son, Shane.
That loss had to have taken a terrible toll on her.
I can't imagine.
:(

My utmost condolences to her surviving children, and the rest of her family and friends.

I’m so devastated by this news. She was ahead of her time in so many aspects and was a hero of mine. I hope she has found the peace she deserved here on earth. Thankful, too, her story was able to be properly shared previous to this horrible news (her memoir which is brilliant and the documentary). Love to the family :,(

Such sad but not entirely unexpected news tonight, an incredible talent. She also had the bravery and guts to call out the Catholic Church years ago when nobody else would touch it. How right she was.
Rest peacefully Sinead and thank you for the music, you will be missed.
