Cape Town schoolgirl Valencia Farmer was only 14 when she was gang raped, stabbed 42 times in the back and her throat was cut in Cape Town in 1999.
Despite her injuries, she managed to crawl for help where her mom and a good samaritan found her. She also helped police identify her attackers by hand signals, before she died in hospital a day later.
Although six men were tried, only three were found guilty and Valencia's mom, Sylvia Farmer, has recently been fighting the attempts of two of them to get parole after they've served 16 years of their 'life' sentences. So Sylvia was heartened to hear this week that Lieutenant Colonel Eddie Clark has been pursuing the case and a new suspect has been charged with her daughter's murder.
The suspect - thought to be a gang member aged 21 at the time of the murder but who has not been identified - appeared in court Monday, where a magistrate (sort of circuit judge) warned him he faces a life sentence if found guilty. The case is likely to be transferred to Western Cape High Court.
