Rescuers searching for missing toddler who fell down 100m well in Spain - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

More than 100 firefighters and emergency workers in southern Spain are searching for a two-year-old boy who fell into a narrow and deep borehole.

Rescuers have been unable to get into the borehole, which is no wider than 25 centimetres in diameter and is believed to reach depths of more than 100 metres.

On Monday afternoon (local time) they deployed three different approaches to reach the bottom of the well without damaging its structure or blocking it with soil and rocks, local authorities said.

According to rescuers, the toddler fell into the hole early on Sunday afternoon after walking away from his parents while playing in a mountainous area near the town of Totalan, north-east of the city of Malaga.

The hole, which is too narrow for an adult to enter, had been bored a month earlier during water prospection works and had not been covered or protected, according to local media reports.

The provincial representative of the Spanish Government, Maria Gamez, said that firefighters using a robot camera in the early hours of Monday found a bag of lollies that the boy was carrying when he went missing.

Civil Guard spokesman Bernardo Molto told Spanish public broadcaster TVE that efforts would now focus on using more sophisticated equipment to widen the hole while also digging separate tunnels to access the shaft.

Asked whether the investigation is also considering any other reasons for the boy's disappearance, Mr Molto said the authorities' priorities were "searching, locating and rescuing the boy".

The autopsy done today by five forensic doctors to the young Julen indicates that the boy died the same day he fell in the well, on January 13, when he enjoyed a field day with his family in Totalán.

The exam, which began at 8:30 am and has been delayed until 2:00 pm, is now pending the tests and complementary studies, which will be carried out at the Institute of Toxicology of Seville.

Last night, in the judicial act of removal of the corpse, two other forensic doctors participated, who ordered that the body was first transferred to the Clinical Hospital of Malaga to perform radiological tests in order to check if it presented fractures.

Relatives, friends and neighbors of Julen's parents clothe José and Victoria, parents of the child, in the funeral home of the El Palo cemetery, which is guarded by police. La autopsia apunta a que Julen murió el mismo día en que cayó al pozo en Totalán

The autopsy points out that #Julen died the same day he fell into the well

I'm relieved by that, it would have been unbearable if he'd been alive for days and days afterwards. Is there an official cause of death yet? I thought it might be suffocation, unless the actual fall killed him.

Family and friends are mourning a two-year-old boy who fell down a well and was found dead in a tragic end to a 13-day rescue operation.

Emergency services worked round-the-clock to reach two-year-old Julen Rosello, who plunged down a narrow, illegal well on January 13 as his parents prepared lunch nearby in Totalan, a southern town near Malaga.

The rescue team found the body of the toddler earlier this morning, as hundreds gathered to pay their respects to the two-year-old as his body was taken to the funeral home this afternoon.

His grieving parents, Jose and Vicky Rosello, both 29, can be seen clutching a football as they mourn the death of their young son.

Wonder if that is normal that the results would be sent to an investigative court.

I guess I always thought once an autopsy is done its done. Maybe that is normal.

First time I hear that it was an illegal well.
This land belongs to a family member ... they must be devastated as well.

I agree the person who dug the well and the landowner are probably devastated too.

They have a huge interest in making sure the autopsy and investigation is done properly. Because if there is any fallout from this tragedy then some of it may fall on them too.
