Investigators Seek Boston Bombing Suspect’s Laptop

snipped

BOSTON — The search for evidence in the Boston Marathon bombings sent white-suited investigators combing through the garbage at a landfill in New Bedford, Mass., on Thursday as they hunted for a laptop computer belonging to one of the suspects, a law enforcement official said.

...Contrary to initial reports that the police had “exchanged” gunfire with the suspect, the official said it appeared that police officers surrounding the boat had apparently fired into it after they saw something push through the boat’s tarp, and feared it might be an explosive device or a gun.

“One officer then fired,” the law enforcement official said. “The other officers there, hearing a shot going off, thought it was coming from the suspect and started shooting until the cease-fire was ordered.”

No that's all, they also said when they asked Russia for more info they never got a response from them. They said there was little to no info supplied by the Russians, basically a name and birthdate.

Don't forget the Russians didn't ask him to be investigated as a warning to the US, it was because he had traveled back to their country they were concerned. They didn't care what he was doing until he came to Russia the first time around.

Matter of fact they also pointed out that the reason they didn't get a ping on his second trip was because the Russian's misspelled his name on the return travel docs so the US computers never picked it up...

anyways like I said, it's the Russians and it's not like they are the last bastion of integrity when it comes to this stuff, they're looking out for Russia not the USA

Here's the thing for me: Russia's Federal Security Service asked the FBI to look into Tamerlan Tsarnaev back in 2011. From this article:

The FBI opened an investigation of Tamerlan Tsarnaev in 2011 at the behest of Russian officials who expressed concern that he was becoming radicalized and could be planning an attack in Russia.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/world...d426de-addb-11e2-8bf6-e70cb6ae066e_story.html

What I want to know is why Russian officials were concerned back in 2011 that Tamerlan was becoming radicalized & could have been planning an attack in Russia?

Putin may or not be posturing now, but I'm curious as to why Tamerlan was in Russia's crosshairs 2 years ago. I think there's much more to this backstory on Tamerlan & his family. Hopefully, trustworthy information will come out soon, explaining why Russia was suspicious of Tamerlan. He attracted their attention for a reason, IMO.

As it turns out, their concerns weren't unfounded, except that the terrorist attack occurred on US soil, and not Russian soil.

"A few minutes after 11 a.m., at least a dozen FBI agents arrived at the apartment building and created a perimeter around it. They entered the building after a few minutes. At about 12:30 p.m. agents left with a computer and other electronics."

That's not the way Napolitano told the story. She said the misspelling wasn't a factor. According to her, they did know TT had re-entered the country. but there was no alert because the investigation of TT had 'expired".

Here is what Napolitano said:.

Napolitano said that even though Tsarnaev's name was misspelled, redundancies in the system allowed his departure to be captured by U.S. authorities in January 2012. But she said that by the time he came back six months later, an FBI alert on him had expired and so his re-entry was not noted.

"The system pinged when he was leaving the United States. By the time he returned all investigations had been closed," Napolitano said.

Apparently, Tamerlan's departure was noted, but that his return was not, since the FBI alert on him had expired.

Yeah, thanks. It is who I was thinking of. I thought I remembered FBI taking her computer! We did discuss this. She was quite upset & embarrassed it seemed to be caught up in this. She was upset about her brothers being suspects and the devastation they caused. At least from what I remember...

Hmmm... Important info.

Developments in Boston bombing inquiry
By CNN Staff

Snipped:
-- "Members of the MIT community" are being asked -- at the request of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's campus police chief and the Middlesex County district attorney's office -- to provide authorities with information related to the night of April 18, MIT administrator Israel Ruiz said in a letter posted on the school's website. Authorities have said they believe MIT police officer Sean Collier was killed that night by the suspected Boston Marathon bombers.

-- The Middlesex County District Attorney's Office hopes to bring charges against Dzhokhar Tsarnaev for his alleged role in incidents last week in Cambridge and Watertown, Massachusetts, spokeswoman Stephanie Guyotte said Thursday. Authorities have said they suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and his late brother, Tamerlan, killed Collier in Cambridge and later were involved in a chase -- during which they allegedly throw bombs out their windows -- and shootout that ended in nearby Watertown. "We're still investigating," Guyotte said.

Snipped:
-- Russia raised concerns to U.S. authorities about Zubeidat Tsarnaev, the mother of the Boston Marathon bombings' suspects, in 2011 at the same time they asked the U.S. about her son Tamerlan, several sources told CNN.

-- Also, U.S. authorities added both the mother and son to the Terrorist Identities Datamart Environment, or TIDE, database -- a collection of more than a half million names maintained by the National Counterterrorism Center, an intelligence official said.

-- FBI agents interviewed the mother as part of the investigation into Tamerlan Tsarnaev, whose case was closed after several months.

-- Tamerlan Tsarnaev's phone number was traced to numbers that came up in two other investigations into terror suspects, according to a senator who attended classified briefings about the Boston attack investigation. The connection between Tamerlan Tsarnaev and the two other suspects was "twice removed," meaning he was in contact with people who had been in contact with the suspect, a U.S. government official said.

Too many links to terrorist activity to be benign. He has to be involved with some other group. How many lone terrorist are there that are so radicalized, travel to areas of terrorism, twice removed from other terrorists, etc?? Not just some lone nut job

Seems they'd better change their tracking & notification system iyam.

A possible terrorist flag should never expire wth. Especially when returning to the US from a area with involved terrorists. :banghead:

This case has shown there are holes in the system and they have been exposed...hopefully, government will plug/correct these gaps before something happens again.

I didn't know they had a video of the shooting of the MIT cop. Could you post a link? TIA!

They have not released the video, I got the feeling it's a dash board cam type thing. I'm sure it's out of respect to the fallen officer and also like the video of #2 setting down his backpack it's being held as evidence

Omg there's sooo much more at that link I just have above! Here's something else...

-- The mother of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects said Thursday that she'd called an ambulance to take her husband, Anzor Tsarnaev, to a hospital in the southern Russian city of Makhachkala. It was not immediately known whether Anzor Tsarnaev was ever admitted to a hospital and, if so, if he is still there.

Why was he admitted? What illness or accident?

Perhaps his "brain tumor" <cough> beating by three Russian athletes <cough> has returned?

Why was he admitted? What illness or accident?

No idea. Not sure if he was admitted or if he was just taken there via ambulance to be looked at by a med dr. Wish we knew more. Maybe it could be from the stress of hearing his boys are involved in the bombings.

I have to agree. And naturally I am now wondering if the train plot is connected OR if Murderer #1 has had contact with the train people before.

Will we ever get real answers? I wonder about that, too.

So, DT and mom both don't know the full name of Misha and where he is? Or won't tell?

And frankly, whatever info DT gives about Times Square or whatever other plans they had....I'd take with 100 grains of salt because he has no incentive to tell the truth and this story could be a diversion from something else that's going to happen.

Suddenly, I have a song stuck in my head: Smashing Pumpkins - Bullet with Butterfly Wings - "Rat in a Cage."

Wonder if this family is beginning to feel like there is nowhere left to hide?

Do you have a link?

Here you go

Republican Rep. Bob Goodlatte of Virginia, the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, told CNN on Wednesday that he believed a breakdown in communication occurred between the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees border control, and the FBI.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano told legislators on Tuesday that Tsarnaev's departure for Russia in January 2012 pinged "the system," but Goodlatte said that information apparently never made it to the FBI.

"They were not apparently sharing that information," he said. "So the FBI, according to what we now understand, did not know that he was in Russia for six months and and did not follow up on his return. So all of these things lead to more questions about what needs to be done to make sure that these types of things don't happen in the future."

“I’m not sure if we have any witnesses,” Cambridge police spokesman Dan Riviello said. “There was a surveillance camera at MIT that captured some information.”

The footage from that camera shows the Tsarnaev brothers approaching Collier’s cruiser from behind, he said. Police assigned to investigate Collier’s death have not interviewed Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, he said.
