Apparently the husband was right in his suspicions... she had another man and maybe she got together with him... when she crossed that hill knowing that he would be there she escaped with him... maybe the husband at that point in his life didn't She cared about that and left everything as it was... if she were still alive she would be about 100 years old and that is very difficult...

A Florida woman who was visiting the Smokies in 1981 is still missing more than 42 years after her disappearance.
Thelma Pauline Melton, 58, of Jacksonville, Florida, disappeared while hiking with two friends on September 25, 1981, according to the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System.
If Melton were found alive today, she would be 101 years old.
