A highway worksite has quickly evolved into a crime scene, with investigators from six agencies trying to identify the human skeleton found in a shallow grave outside the city.

The skeleton was wrapped in a blanket and buried near the intersection of Highway 286 and FM 43.

Investigators said a recent fire in the area may have damaged some evidence, but it also led to the discovery of the crime scene. The fire cleared away a lot of the overgrowth that had hidden the bones from view.

TxDOT workers were checking out the burned area Wednesday as part of a project to improve the nearby intersection when they realized the bones they found did not belong to an animal.

There are 26 men reported missing from the Corpus Christi area, and authorities are cross checking the evidence with names on the list.
One of them is Joe Plazola. His family was at the Nueces County Sheriff's Department Friday morning looking at the recovered items.
The discovery of the bones has rekindled heartache for them.
On 6 News, Hope Plazola saw a white tennis shoe collected as evidence and immediately thought, "That could possibly be my brother's remains."
The family rushed to the excavation site on Thursday.
"I had to see, I had to see," Hope Plazola said.
It has been nine years since hope lost her brother, Joe.
"It's hard to let go," Hope said. "No closure, nothing to go on. Nothing at all."
Friday morning, the family went to the sheriff's office to view the items collected at the crime scene, some of which looked strangely familiar.

Thank you for update Soonerbabie. Prayers for all those who have missing loved ones who wait for the positive identification.

I just thought I'd include this here since I don't know if anyone was following Chris' case.

Chris went missing since April 5th 2004 in Corpus Texas. His remains were found Feb 7th in Corpus and his parents have since been notified.

His death has been ruled a homicide.

CORPUS CHRISTI — The bones found in a shallow grave in rural Nueces County have been identified as 29-year-old Christopher Henderson investigators said Thursday.

Henderson had been missing since 2004 and his family now lives in San Antonio.

A Texas Department of Transportation work crew found his remains in January in a makeshift grave.

A forensic pathologist at a lab in Denton connected Henderson to the remains based on dental records.

CORPUS CHRISTI — Apolinar “Paul” Moreno didn’t want to take any more chances with a jury.

He waited as jurors deliberated seven hours over two days to find him guilty of murder. He cried after the verdict and asked a deputy for a tissue to wipe his nose.

Minutes later, Moreno and his attorney tried to strike a deal on sentencing. Moreno took prosecutor Joe Mike Peña’s offer of 20 years in prison. He faced as long as life in prison and a $10,000 fine.

The deal means Moreno, 37, had to waive his right to appeal.

Moreno was convicted in the shooting death of Christopher Henderson, who went missing in 2004.
