Really sad news.
The child was reported missing from her home in Kingsley, near Bordon, shortly after 5pm on Sunday and was found in Kingsley Pond. In an update, Hampshire Police said she had died in hospital.
The spokesperson added: "A woman, aged in her 40s, has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

"She is currently in police custody."

It’s worth including an article from this morning, as it mentions Within 10 mins of the 2 year old girl being reported missing her being found in the pond. There are also maps to show how near it is from her home.

I read that article this morning and from the information given in it was what made me think she had wandered away .

Are we thinking the woman in custody is her mother?

The road is a main road that runs through the village. Most houses are set back slightly from the road with a few a bit closer. The pond is a way back from the road. You walk through a car park to get there.

I assumed she had wondered off down a familiar route.

What the heck is going on? This sweet 2 yr old was apparently reported missing from her home. Police were searching....

And a woman was reportedly screaming "Help" from the nearby pond....where the baby was found, clinging to life.

A woman in her 40's was arrested because of her mental health but has since been released, for now....

Did a crazy woman kidnap this little sweetheart and kill her?

Or did someone else do so, and the unstable woman just happened upon the baby and yelled for help?

flowers at scene

Tributes have been left at the edge of the pond
A woman arrested following the death of a two-year-old girl found in a village pond has been detained under the Mental Health Act.

The woman, in her 40s, had been arrested on suspicion of murder and has now been released from police custody. She remains under investigation.

The 40 year woman has been detained in a mental health unit. It is possible that the woman was the child's mother.

A police marine unit today searched the village pond where tragic Annabel Mackey was found unconscious.

Specialist officers from Hampshire Constabulary's Marine Unit carried out an underwater search as part of the force's ongoing murder investigation.

Three marine officers were seen crawling on their hands and knees in the water, meticulously scouring the shallow pond floor for evidence.

The specific area of Kingsley Pond the officers searched - where it is believed little Annabel was found - appeared to be little more than 1ft deep.

A metal detector was used to sweep the bottom of the pond and officers could be seen putting unidentified items into an evidence bag.

Before the dive at Kingsley Pond, a hi-tech robot was deployed in the water to examine the bottom of the pond using sonar.

The device was in the water for 30 minutes while officers stood by the side of the pond using controls to direct it around the pond.

A police drone was also flown above the water.
