Has anyone second guessed "the sheep in wolves clothing"? I think it is either CE or KE. What do others think?

CH pleaded not guilty this week and has chose to represent himself at trial. That is likely due to the change in Legal Aid legislation here in UK. The only way he could get representation by a barrister is if they are confident of winning the case. Her father has escalated his obscure claims and all out war has erupted on his FB page as he continues his one man battle against his ex wife rather than his claim of getting justice for his daughter

Trial underway. Much more at link.

A taxi driver who is serving life in prison for the brutal, sexually motivated killing of Sian O’Callaghan led police to a shallow grave in a remote field where he had buried a second murder victim about eight years earlier, a jury has been told.

While Christopher Halliwell, 52, was under arrest for the murder of Swindon nightclubber O’Callaghan, he was driven by officers to the spot on the side of a road in Oxfordshire where her semi-naked body was discovered.

There, he told the detective who was with him: “I’m a sick *advertiser censored**er,” and took him to a ploughed field where he said he had buried a sex worker he had picked up on the streets of Swindon several years before, Bristol crown court was told.

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news...ering-woman-and-burying-body?CMP=share_btn_tw

Gobsmacked that he's defending himself. It seems open and shut, not sure what his defence can be, maybe I'm missing something. Going to read this thread from the beginning.

In a statement read out in court, Edwards [Becky's mother] said Godden fell into drug addiction and began running away from home aged 15. The family assumed she was working as a prostitute as she had money to buy drugs, but never “mentally accepted it”, she said.

At 16, Godden managed to get clean from drugs and started working at Reader’s Digest. “I felt so relieved and thought the bad times were over,” Edwards said. “After about a year of being clean, Becky began socialising with her old circle of friends and got dragged back into the world of drugs.”

[...]

Halliwell, who is defending himself, cross-examined Miss X from the dock, where he was surrounded by security guards. He told Miss X he had never seen her before, adding: “I don’t have to tell you how serious this matter is. Please take a good, hard look at me and confirm the person you are thinking of is me.”

Miss X stared at Halliwell and replied: “It definitely is you.”

Halliwell later told the court: “I’ve never seen that woman before … it is a fairytale.”

Miss X said: “I don’t understand how he can sit there and say he doesn’t know me. I’m a hundred, million per cent sure.”

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news...s-last-time-she-saw-daughter?CMP=share_btn_tw

The cross-examining can't be easy on witnesses. Again, more at link.

Judge explaining tojury that reason prosecution are telling them about Sian's murder isthat are similarities with Becky's death.

Halliwell now asksMissX "what colour are my eyes"
Miss X "can Iask you what colour are Becky's eyes"
"I wouldn'tknow" says the accused

The trial of minicab driver Christopher Halliwell - accused of murdering #Swindon woman Becky Godden has begun. @itvwestcountry

Wow, thanks Legally for those tweets.
I had forgotten about this case, but saw something on my twitter feed today from a Journo I follow, who is in court.
Must have a complete read up and get up to date.
I remember Sian's case very well and the part when Halliwell took the police to * find * the second body - which turned out to be Becky.

Luckily the witnesses don't seem to be fazed by questioning from a confessed murderer.

Have to wonder what his defence submission is going to be ? I mean, he couldn't be more guilty if he tried, taking the police to the body !

Have to wonder what his defence submission is going to be ? I mean, he couldn't be more guilty if he tried, taking the police to the body !

How does this even work? If he takes the stand does he ask himself questions? Get someone else to ask prepared questions?

If he doesn't take the stand how does the prosecution get to cross ex evidence he has given whilst questioning witnesses?

You're right, he's surely going to be found guilty, but I'm intrigued as to how this will play out in court.

It also seems he didn't give an opening statement, as one of the tweets mentions the first time he spoke in court was when he was cross examining Miss X.

As an aside I really hope X and Y have turned their lives around, both are mentioned as being ex-drug addicts and sex workers, so fingers crossed. Hope they stay strong.

I was wondering last night as to why Halliwell had not been charged with Becky's murder five years ago, when he confessed to killing her.

Here's a link to an old article, which says his confession was ruled inadmissible because he was not properly cautioned by the police.

It seems the police then began to investigate the case three years later in 2014 !

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...Halliwell-murder-woman-seen-12-years-ago.html

Article from 2014 when police found more items belonging to Sian and worked on finding a connection between Becky and Halliwell

Last month police found Miss O'Callaghan's brown boots, a shotgun, and a huge hoard of women's clothing in and around an 8ft deep pond in woodland in Ramsbury, Wiltshire.

Halliwell admitted picking her up and murdering her and is now serving 25 years.

The killer also led police to the grave of a second woman, Becky Godden-Edwards, who disappeared around 2007 when she was 25.

However, he was formally cleared of murdering her when a judge ruled a senior detective had broken the rules surrounding arrests.

A CID source said the recent finds have prompted fears there are more victims.

An anonymous CID source told the Sunday Express: 'We are being methodical and careful.

'We don't want to make any mistakes and the major thrust is to find some link to Becky so we can re-interview Halliwell under caution.

Have to wonder what his defence submission is going to be ? I mean, he couldn't be more guilty if he tried, taking the police to the body !

Of course he is. He only escaped prosecution before because of a technicality. He's just enjoying himself at the court's expense.
Hope the judge gives him a whole-of-life sentence because this deserves it. Very likely there are more victims too.

Some tweets from Sky - read from the bottom upwards

The GP noted that Halliwell had "scratches on his face" & seemed "emotionally upset & distressed" when talking about the attack.

GP said Christopher Halliwell, a taxi driver, had a "sore right hand" & said he'd been assaulted by a male passenger.

Hearing statement from defendant Halliwell's GP, Dr Philip Mayes who says that on 3rd Jan 2003, Halliwell came for an appointment.

The officer kept records of sightings of sex workers for evidence purposes. He did not see Becky Godden after 27th Dec 2002.

Hearing a statement from PC Anthony Miles whose beat included an area of Bristol where street workers & kerb crawlers operated.

Now hearing statement from Halliwell's former wife, Lisa, who photocopied his work diaries between 2000- 2005.

Lisa Halliwell recalls that her ex husband "made a fuss" about having the diaries back- she thought it was due to the divorce proceedings.

The prosecution says that the work diaries are blank for the 3rd & 4th January 2003, & entries begin again on the 6th January.

BBM. I totally agree.

"It was a pleasure ruining your career" Halliwell says as he finishes his line of questioning to the police officer

Hearing now from today's first 'live' witness, Heather Widdowson, who is giving evidence from behind a screen.

Ms Widdowson was a neighbour- their children used to play together- & Halliwell helped her convert her garage.

Ms Widdowson says that a relationship developed between the pair & Halliwell left his wife Lisa & moved into Heather's house in 2005.

Ms Widdowson confirms that there were garden implements, including spades, stored in the shed at the house.

Ms Widdowson admits being "shocked" at Halliwell's arrest for the murder of Sian O'Callaghan in 2011 & the relationship ended

Halliwell, who is defending himself, says that he doesn't want to ask Ms Widdowson any further questions.

I'll follow Alyce's lead and break it down to witnesses (thanks for posting the tweets).

Former policeman Steven Fulcher.
_____________

Stephen Fulcher called as a witness. He was the senior investigating officer on Sian O'Callaghan case. Halliwell told him of Becky's body.

Stephen Fulcher is a "consultant working in Somalia". He used to work for Wiltshire police

Fulcher was a Detective Superintendent at the time Sian O'Callaghan went missing. Jury hearing of CCTV that night and a car seen in Swindon

car identified as a taxi and the driver as Christopher Halliwell. He was put under surveillance as no one knew if Sian was still alive

Following arrest of Halliwell he was taken to a location near the Uffington White horse where Sian's body was found...

Halliwell told Fulcher "we need to have a chat"
They drove to the Uffington White horse and went for a walk.
Fulcher gave him a cigarette.

Fulcher asked him what he wanted to say. Halliwell said "I'm a sick ******er..... another one... I don't know if you wanted to go for another"

Halliwell was talking about another body and the "exact location" of where it is..

"Was it a similar thing before" asked Fulcher and Halliwell replied "yes she was a prostitute on the game"

"I might be sick but I'm not ******ing stupid" Halliwell told the SIO during their conversation about Sian and another body

Fulcher now explaining how Halliwell showed them location of Becky's body in Eastleach by pacing it out having climbed over a wall

Halliwell told Fulcher he picked up a prostitute in Swindon "He told me he had sex with her and killed her by strangling her"

Fulcher and Halliwell then walked away from the site. He was allowed to urinate and the policeman gave him a cigarette

Halliwell now cross examining the man he originally confessed to about location of Becky's body

Fulcher explains to Halliwell that the exact location was 10 metres out but the same distance from the wall as Halliwell had measured

If you recall we had a helicopter above our heads and we had a very tense situation at the time" Fulcher reminds Halliwell

Basically you've got it wrong. I never said that" says Halliwell to the former cop about a detail of the confession

Led me to conclude there were other victims" Fulcher says about Halliwell's confusion over depth of Becky's grave

It was a pleasure ruining your career" Halliwell says as he finishes his line of questioning to the police office

Halliwell tells Fulcher that the first time he went to the location of Becky's body was when the SIO took him there

Policeman Benjamin Mount
___________

Halliwell told officers he had put Becky's body in a hedge after killing her. Then returned the next night and buried her

He said she was buried beneath an exact point he was indicating.

As evidence is given by a police officer about how Halliwell said he had killed and buried Becky, her mother Karen walks out of court.

When asked how he had killed Becky, Halliwell replied "I strangled her"

Halliwell was "calm and controlled" when he was telling Fulcher about the body, court hears.

My feeling was Mr Halliwell wanted to tell us what happened and perhaps found some relief by the fact he had done so."

Benjamin Mount - who joined SF and Halliwell in the field - has now finished giving his evidence.
