Scientists reconstruct man’s face in bid to identify skeleton - Evening Express

The skeletal remains were discovered by a forestry worker almost 12 months ago near to the Bathurst Estate in Cirencester, Gloucestershire.

Police have a full DNA profile of the man but have been unable to identify him and have turned to forensic experts for help.

Professor Caroline Wilkinson made the 2D reconstruction of the man’s face from his skeletal remains (Caroline Wilkinson/PA)
Gloucestershire Police enlisted Professor Caroline Wilkinson, director of Liverpool John Moores University’s Face Lab, to produce a 2D image of his face.

They are now appealing for the public’s help to name the man, who may have lay dead for over a year.

It is thought he was a transient traveller and his death is not being treated as suspicious.

Despite being found close to a busy road there is no evidence to suggest he was involved in a road accident.

Detectives have also sought help from a forensic anthropologist and odontologist who have concluded the deceased was a white man, between 5ft 5in and 5ft 8in tall and who may have been of a large build.

Their reports also suggest he was aged between 28 and 31 but could be as old as 55.

Will this pair of aviator sunglasses put a name to the face of a man found dead in the Cotswolds? (Gloucestershire Police/PA)
Crime scene coordinator Martin Cuffe said: “We’ve used two forensic laboratories to produce a DNA profile to identify this person.

“The profile has been searched against the national DNA database and the missing persons DNA database with negative results.

“We’ve also worked alongside a forensic anthropologist and a forensic odontologist who specialise in examining bones and teeth.

“The dental examinations suggested he was between 28 and 31 years old but the skeletal examination suggests he was between 28 and 55.

“It is worth noting that his teeth were in a good condition and had been subject to dental treatment.

“Due to the snowfall in early 2018 we are unable to say how long the body had been undiscovered but we estimate anything from six to 18 months.”

When the man’s remains were found close to the A419 Stroud Road on May 1 last year, he was wearing a black or dark grey Peter Storm raincoat, a grey or blue short sleeved shirt with hand stitched repairs on the rear shoulder seam, a black Blue Harbour gilet and blue trousers with a dark leather belt.

A Karrimor rucksack covered with a white plastic bag was recovered from the scene (Gloucestershire Police/PA).
A pair of dark trainers with a white sole and a beige baseball cap were also found next to the body.

The man also has a Karrimor rucksack, which had a white plastic bag covering it in an attempt at waterproofing, and inside were aviator sunglasses, plastic bottles and toothbrushes.

A small Sony wireless FM radio and a wind-up torch were found nearby.

No personal items, such as a mobile phone or wallet have been recovered, and detectives believe the man was “isolated and of a transient character”.

Police have also not found a sleeping bag or tent.

Police are hoping a wind-up torch and Sony FM wireless radio may help someone identify the man (Gloucestershire Police/PA).
Detective Sergeant Richard Smith, who is working on the investigation, said: “Despite working closely with other agencies, the coroner, the NHS, the Department for Work and Pensions and the National Crime Agency, we have been unable to identify this person.

Can you identify man found dead on road between Stroud and Cirencester?

Face of mystery skeleton reconstructed

"Det Ch Insp Richard Ocone said the body was "pretty decomposed, and was in effect a skeleton" when it was found.

He said the man was probably in his early 30s - although could have been as old as 55 - between 5ft 5in (1.67m) and 5 ft 8 in (1.77m) tall, and likely to have been a white British national."
"The body was clothed in a black or dark grey Peter Storm raincoat, a grey/blue short-sleeved shirt, a black gilet and blue trousers with a dark leather belt.

Dark trainers with a white sole and a beige baseball cap were found nearby.

DNA provided no match with the national DNA database or the missing persons database, so the facial reconstruction was created by experts at Liverpool John Moores University.''

Not sure if this has been created elsewhere but just saw this.

"Gloucestershire Constabulary is appealing for information following the discovery of human remains near the Bathurst Estate in Cirencester last year.

A forestry worker discovered the remains of a man close to the A419 Stroud Road on the afternoon of Tuesday 1 May and we are appealing for information that may help us to identify the individual.

Officers have completed their initial investigations but have been unable to identify the man despite all of the necessary forensic and DNA examinations taking place.

It’s believed that the remains had lain undiscovered for at least twelve months and this is why we are now asking for the public’s help.

Following reports from both a forensic Anthropologist and Odontologist, we believe that the deceased was a white man between five foot five and five foot eight inches tall who may have been of a large build.

These reports also suggest that the man was around 28-31 years old however it is hard to know for definite so he could have been anywhere between the ages of 28 and 55.

We have recently used the services of an expert in facial reconstruction to create an image of what it is believed the man looked like and we hope that this will also help to identify him.

When found the body was clothed in a black/dark grey Peter Storm raincoat, a grey/blue short sleeved shirt (with hand stitched repairs), a black gilet and blue trousers with a dark leather belt.

Dark trainers with a white sole and a beige baseball cap were found next to the body.

A small Sony wireless FM radio, aviator sunglasses, a wind up torch and a Karrimor rucksack (which had a white plastic bag covering it in an attempt to waterproof it) were nearby and these are distinctive items which may help to identify him.

No personal items such as a mobile phone or identification were found and because of this we would say that the man was isolated and of a transient character.

Due to the location where the remains were discovered, it's believed that he may have been travelling between Cirencester and Stroud; this leads us to think that the he may have regularly travelled between different areas of the county.

It was previously thought that the individual may have been a homeless man who is known to the area but this is no longer the case.
We understand that it may be hard to think back this far but if you know of someone who matches the above description that you haven’t seen for some time, or believe that you've previously driven past this man within the county please let us know by calling 101 and quoting Operation Octave."

Information about this man can also be submitted online here or via email at OpOctave@gloucestershire.pnn.police.uk

Police getting closer to identifying human remains discovered in Cotswold wood

c97ffe4e7fb61b8ec281bc46ed95aba0

Detectives trying to identify human remains found in a Cotswold wood have eliminated over 50 potential people from the inquiry.

The skeletal remains were discovered by a forestry worker two years ago near to the Bathurst Estate in Cirencester, Gloucestershire.
---
A subsequent appeal last year led to the public suggesting 73 names, of which 51 have been eliminated from the inquiry.

Gloucestershire Police said inquiries are currently being made into 22 of the suggested names with further DNA analysis being considered.

Detective Inspector Alistair Hammett said: “I would like to thank everyone who submitted information following our appeal last year as this has allowed us to undertake significant follow-up inquiries.

“At this stage, I am not appealing for further information on the man’s identity as a number of lines of inquiry remain, such as speaking to those who are known to the individuals and cross-referencing against missing people and DNA databases.”
---
Police believe the man, who may have lain dead for more than a year, was a transient traveller and his death is not being treated as suspicious.

Despite being found close to a busy road, there is no evidence to suggest he was involved in a road accident.

Hopefully he will be identified soon. And hopefully they have the correct age range in the UK Unidentified database as I notice it has a much smaller range than previously?

Cirencester remains: Dead man's identity still a mystery

An inquest has failed to shed any light on the identity of a man whose body was found in woodland.

Skeletal remains were discovered off the A419 near Cirencester by workmen on 1 May, 2018. Despite a police investigation and DNA checks across Europe, he has not been identified.

In his narrative conclusion, assistant Gloucestershire coroner Roland Wooderson described it as a "most unusual inquest".He admitted he could not answer who the man was, or how, when or where he had died.

"There were no signs of skeletal trauma and the clothing was intact. There was no blood seen on the clothing," he said.

"It is not known how he got there but the nature of the area and the items the man was carrying suggest he was on a journey and had walked to his final resting place."
---
An examination by Dr Lucina Hackman found no signs of trauma and DNA taken from a bone found no matches in any British missing persons' databases or with Interpol.

Dr Hackman concluded the man was of Caucasian ancestry and likely to be aged between 33-55.
