''Giving an update on the search this afternoon, senior investigating officer Det Supt Lewis Basford suggested the couple may have offered their “cash reserves” to a likeminded or non-law abiding individual in exchange for them protecting their baby.

It comes after officers found a pair of child ear muffs in Roedale Valley Allotments, Brighton, as the search for their child continues.

The missing aristocrat and her partner are in police custody after being arrested in Brighton on suspicion of child neglect, officers have confirmed. The force earlier said that the couple have not told them where the baby is.''

Police have also revealed:
  • They hold hope the baby is still alive but admit risk to the child is 'extremely high' and gets worse with every hour;
  • The couple have not given the location of the baby - or its gender. Forensics are testing a placenta found on January 5 to find out;
  • No tents or other items of significance have been found since the search began last night;
  • Main line of inquiry is that the couple had the baby - but detectives cannot rule out that they have found someone like minded and offered them cash to look after the child;
  • The child has never been seen on TV but two taxi drivers have said they saw the baby moving and crying;
  • Last night was the first sighting of the couple since January 8, in Newhaven, and they were arrested six minutes after a 999 call from someone who recognised them from public appeals;
The couple were caught on a doorbell camera heading towards Roedale Valley Allotments in Brighton at 9.25pm last night.

This article says they had shoppoing bags full of food. It would be good to know there was formula or diapers or any item directly related and necessary for care of a baby. Very telling if there wasn't.

The pair have been arrested by Sussex Police on suspicion of child neglect, but their baby has not been found.

Officers are scouring an allotment and golf course on the Sussex Downs, in an "urgent search" involving helicopters, drones and police dogs.

Ms Marten and Gordon, a convicted sex offender, were found after being spotted by a member of the public in the Fiveways area of north Brighton on Monday evening.

The pair were heavily clothed for outdoor activity, Detective Superintendent Lewis Basford from the Met Police said, and were heading back into an open land area when they were arrested.

In a direct appeal to the public, police said the search was "now all about that baby".

Det Supt Basford told journalists: "We are still in a position where we still hold hope that the child is safe and well."

Police flood to quiet residential area in Brighton

This is a very quiet, very residential area on the northern edge of Brighton.

Police cars line the northern tip of Stanmer Villas - sandwiched between allotments and a golf course. It’s in these undulating wooded areas where officers are focusing their search.

Residents in the houses facing the allotments have been hanging over their balconies - keen to be abreast of any significant developments.

The couple were spotted near a convenience store a short walk from here last night.

Residents near that row of shops say despite a circling police helicopter during the night, they heard nothing of the arrest until switching on the news this morning.

Police now apparently ruling out the idea that they might have handed off the baby to the care of a third party (per Sky News report at 4pm).
Is there anything more recent than this? Large-scale police search for newborn baby after missing couple Constance Marten and Mark Gordon arrested

Police also said it was unlikely - but that they hadn't ruled out the possibility - that the child could have been handed to someone else.
EDIT: Just realised you probably mean on TV, well that would suck, it's the only real avenue where the baby is likely actually to be safe and well.

No evidence couple gave baby to anyone - Det Supt Basford

Earlier today Det Supt Lewis Basford from the Metropolitan Police told reporters that the police's "main line of hypothesis" was that Marten and Gordon were "in control and custody of the baby" and that "at no point have we seen, in that short period of CCTV... that they allowed others to have that baby".

The baby appears to have been "concealed within the coat lining of Constance or in the buggy for the short period they had it".

Basford said officers that while there was no sign the couple had given the baby to anybody else, police "could not rule out" that Marten and Gordon had found someone "like-minded or who does not conform or appreciate the establishment" and used the money they had for "safe lodging".

However, Basford also added that after the arrests, this line of inquiry did not become "as significant".

Thats not good.

I really hope that if they did have a recent shop/food bank run with them upon arrest - those bags had babythings in them. If there was nothing or they didn't at least ask the (maybe) food bank for such items, I'd agree that's a sign the baby isn't with them anymore. Babies need a lot of stuff, and they must have been limiting their contact with civilization as much as possible to stay hidden so long, so would be doing shops only when they had to.

Though if they did have baby-related shopping it makes me fear for where the baby is after almost a whole day of cold weather. These two have proven very resistant to co-operating with authorities even if it means putting the baby at risk. I prey that doesn't extend to letting it die of exposure rather than letting police find the poor little thing, but I'm not as confident about that as I want to be.

I wish they had tailed them back to their camp. Though I understand the decision not to. There probably has been plenty of false sightings all over the country - a random local unit was likely just sent out to check this sighting out. Once they spotted/stopped them, well they were probably aware police had seen them as well and they've proven very adapt at slipping away even in the face of massive police resourcing. Grabbing them was probably the only option at that point.

That baby would not have been 'ripped from its parents'.
It would, however, have been 'whisked off to hospital'.
For the medical checks and treatment it should have had 54 days ago.

IMO

Couple arrested on suspicion of manslaughter

Police say they are continuing the search for the baby.
The parents were initially arrested for child neglect and have now been further arrested on charges of gross negligence and manslaughter, the detective says.
