A 16-year-old boy found with stab wounds in the street has died, prompting a murder inquiry.

Kennie Carter was found badly injured in Thirlmere Avenue, Stretford, shortly before 19:00 GMT on Saturday, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said.

He was taken to hospital but died shortly afterwards.

A police spokesman said five boys aged 15-17 were being held on suspicion of murder following arrests in Stretford, Old Trafford and Hulme.

One of the teenagers, aged 17, being held on suspicion of murder handed himself in at a police station later in the day.

Not saying it's necessarily what's happened here, but given the stratospheric increase in fatal stabbings of teenagers by other teenagers, people need to know how closely linked knife crime in this demographic group is to child criminal exploitation (CCE) and County Lines activity, where a willingness to take part in escalating peer-on-peer violence can be the only way for exploited kids to try and protect their own safety.

A 14-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of murdering a teenager who died after being stabbed in the chest.

Kennie Carter, 16, was found in Thirlmere Avenue, Stretford, shortly before 19:00 GMT on Saturday, police said. He died in hospital.

A 14-year-old boy is the sixth teenager to have been arrested on suspicion of his murder following earlier arrests in Stretford, Old Trafford and Hulme.

Police said the boys, aged 15 to 17, are detained in separate custody sites.

A ninth person has been arrested on suspicion of murdering a 16-year-old boy who was stabbed to death.

Greater Manchester Police said it had so far spoken to 50 people, collected more than 100 hours of CCTV and executed eight warrants.

A 14-year-old boy is the latest suspect to be arrested on suspicion of murder as part of the investigation.

Five murder suspects remain on bail with conditions not to enter the Stretford area.

This is just awful. We don't know the detail of what's happened here, but my strong suspicion is that it's a county lines or similar organised crime situation where multiple young people have been sucked into criminal exploitation, and persuaded to carry knives and prove themselves by using them. From what I know and what I've read, the criminal justice system - both police and courts - is not up to speed with understanding these children as co-victims of higher-level crime.

I really hope this murder is going to be investigated at a deeper level than just in terms of who did it/can we prove it, as something urgently needs to blow the lid off the epidemic of teenage knife crime currently engulfing the UK. Nothing will change until the real causes are identified and grappled with. Putting one set of kids away for assaulting/murdering other kids is just not a good enough way of understanding what is happening here, still less of stopping it.
