A devout Christian’s headless body was found near the Devon coast with a Biblical quote written on a scrap of paper in her jacket pocket.

Pathologist Dr Deborah Cook said she arrived at the scene near the Salcombe estuary to examine the decapitated body shortly after 11pm on June 27 last year.
She told jurors: “It was apparent that the head and at least the first two bones that form the spine were absent.”
The larynx at the front of the neck was also missing.

"Ms Chong was also wearing a dress and strappy sandals with the handle of a purple handbag looped in one.

Inside the bag was a camera, a tote bag and a length of orange rope which the prosecution alleges matches some found at Mitchell's home.

The head was almost entirely "de-fleshed", but the pathologist cast doubt on whether animals were responsible."

Some very strange details here. Is it staging?

Giving evidence in court, a radiologist told jurors that Ms Chong’s body would have fitted inside the large blue suitcase Mitchell was seen on CCTV footage dragging away from the victim’s home. [...]

He said “My opinion was the suitcase, with the dimensions provided to me, could accommodate the body with the head attached or without.

“That would have been in the foetal position, curled up on the side.”

He said an individual who was slightly bigger than Ms Chong had tested the hypothesis and could easily fit in a slightly smaller suitcase.

[...]

The court has heard she gave her name as Julia and asked to be picked up from a different address and taken to the house next door to where she lived. [...]

As he turned in the road to leave, he said he could not understand why Mitchell was still standing by the driveway where he had dropped her off.

Victim told neighbour she was being ‘healed’ by murder-accused, court hears

Prosecutor Lucy Organ read out a series of witness statements, including one from a next door neighbour ......
Ms Chong would talk about religion and used to host yoga and spiritual sessions ...
She said: 'She had messaged me about a lady called Jemma who was an osteopath and spiritual healer who was helping her.

On June 3 last year, Ms Chong informed her lodger that she was sick and needed the room so she could get help around the house.

A devout Christian urged her friend to sell her dilapidated home for £4 million and enjoy the money - before being allegedly killed and decapitated by her, a court has been told.

On Friday, Judge Richard Marks, said it was "not the case for either the prosecution or the defence that the defendant is guilty of manslaughter as opposed to murder".

He continued: "The prosecution say this is a case of premeditated murder and that is the reason why the defendant took the suitcase with her to the house on 11 June - i.e. for the purpose of removing the body.

"The defence on the other hand say that the prosecution have failed to prove that Deborah Chong was unlawfully killed and then, even if you conclude that she was, they have failed to prove that she was unlawfully killed by the defendant."

Thanks, I cannot understand what is going on - not only the suitcase but also the rucksack and 'disguises' where her appearance was changed before arriving at the house, it seems inconceivable it was an 'accident' as being reported in MSM today

Jurors have begun deliberating in the trial of a woman accused of murdering her devout Christian friend and dumping her headless body in Devon. Jemma Mitchell, 38, is charged with the murder of Mee Kuen Chong, 67

On Friday, Judge Richard Marks told jurors they could consider a lesser charge of manslaughter.

Judge Richard Marks KC sent the jury out to deliberate on a verdict at 3.15pm on Tuesday.

Gosh, no verdict yet.

An article here about her defence closing speech -

[...]

Mr Jory went on to say that police officers did not find any forensic evidence at either Ms Chong's or Mitchell's homes.

Police searched the victim's property for ten days but found 'nothing'.

They also searched Mitchell's house in Brondesbury Park, employing fifty officers and sniffer dogs to do so, the court heard.

'There is no evidence after all of that that any DNA of Deborah's was found inside,' Mr Jory said.

'You cannot see inside that case, it would be simply a guess.'

Woman had 'heavy' item in suitcase but 'no evidence it was a body'
