David Ladd, 48, who lives on the street, said he saw his neighbour being arrested last night.

He said: ‘I came back last night from a motorbike ride about 10pm and there were a load of plain clothes police officers in the street.

‘They had arrested Wayne. I saw him in handcuffs being put in the back of an unmarked silver car. Uniformed officers turned up and have been outside Wayne’s house since then.

‘I’d seen that he had a motorbike and I had some problems with the exhaust on my bike and so went to see him to see if he could help. He gave me a few tips on what to do and we got chatting.’

A woman was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender at the same location and was also detained at a London police station.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan told the PA news agency that he was in regular contact with the Met Commissioner Dame Cressida Dick about the investigation.

Khan added: “It is now in the public domain that a serving Met Police officer has been arrested. One of the things that this confirms that actually our police service, when it comes to keeping the public safe, when it comes to investigating crime, they work in a situation that is without fear or favour. They will follow the investigation to wherever it takes.”

As officers painstakingly combed 500-acre Hoad's Wood, locals said it was often used as a dumping ground.

Two miles west of Ashford in Kent, the desolate spot is flanked by a railway line and an abandoned golf and paintballing centre.

Rob, a resident whose family owns part of the wood, said: 'My family used to bury sheep in there in the old days. No one ever goes through it because it's private.

'It's all bramble and trees.'

He said flytippers often dumped rubbish there, including old cars.

Dad-of-two Couzens commuted into London from his coastal home to guard some of Britain’s most high-profile buildings and people.

It was his dream come true after previously having worked at his family’s garage repair business.

He joined the Civil Nuclear Constabulary before moving on to serve in the Metropolitan Police.

Shaven-headed Couzens was highly regarded among colleagues for his calm approach — a key attribute for a gun cop.

[..]

“Wayne and his wife were brought out by police between 9pm and 10pm.

“He was in handcuffs and was put in the back of a van while his wife was put in a car.

[..]

The couple, who married in 2006, were described as “chatty”.

Their children are featured on their social media and attended a local school.

[..]

Couzens had previously worked for more than 20 years at a garage run by his dad Ray in Dover.

BCB Dover at Western Heights closed in 2015 after 48 years. Couzens started as an apprentice in 1990 working as a light-vehicle body repair technician.

He worked there until 2011 before following in the footsteps of his brother David and becoming a cop.

He was based at Dungeness and received firearms training with the nuclear force.

[..]

Couzens transferred to the Met in September 2018 and worked as an armed diplomatic protection officer based in Westminster and guarding embassies and high-profile potential targets.

[..]

Couzens’ wife grew up in Ukraine and obtained a first-class degree in biochemistry at the University of Donetsk.

[..]

After working as a lab technician in Ukraine, she moved to Britain. She is employed as a lab manager for an engineering company.

Gardener John Chidwick, 67, who lives in a block of flats opposite, said Couzens is well spoken and “always appeared to be happy”.

The Facebook event, titled ‘Reclaim These Streets’, was set up after Ms Everard went missing while walking home last week.

The organisers have demanded that the capital’s streets be a safe place for women.

The vigil will begin at 6pm on Saturday at the bandstand in Clapham Common. Attendees are asked to wear a mask and practice social distancing.

In a description for the event, the organisers said "We believe that streets should be safe for women, regardless of what you wear, where you live or what time of day or night it is.

“We shouldn’t have to wear bright colours when we walk home and clutch our keys in our fists to feel safe.

Body found in hunt for Sarah Everard: Police find 'human remains' in Kent wood after arresting serving Met officer, 48, 'who spent day she vanished guarding London's US Embassy' on suspicion her murder

It is understood detectives began to suspect father-of-two Couzens after a vehicle linked to him, reportedly a hire car, was allegedly seen on another motorist's dashcam near to where Miss Everard vanished on March 3.

Detectives carried out a search of Couzens' locker at the police base in the Palace of Westminster on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, police began searching his £200,000 Kent home and garden while a £20,000 black Seat Exeo was taken away on a lowloader. Officers were also seen photographing a motorbike in the property's garage.

Police who arrested Couzens are understood to have taken a memory card as part of their investigation.

The policeman arrested on suspicion of killing Sarah Everard was watched for days by armed undercover detectives before they swooped to arrest him.

Wayne Couzens, 48, remains in custody today held on suspicion of the kidnap and murder of Miss Everard and indecent exposure to a second unnamed victim.

Sources have suggested that plain clothes detectives may have been secretly monitoring the suspect's movements for days before he was arrested at home in Deal, Kent, just before midnight on Tuesday.

One said: 'From the moment the suspect was identified he would have been under constant physical and electronic surveillance as the risk of allowing him to commit further offences would have been too great', the insider said.

'There is also the possibility that police - initially at least - may still have believed that he could have led them to the location of Sarah Everard if she were still alive or otherwise.'

Sources told The Times that while detectives were searching social media messages, they had so far not found a link between Couzens and Everard.

The source said there was "so far there is no evidence" of a link but added: "You can’t be 100 per cent certain at this stage but so far it is a leading line of inquiry that Sarah didn’t know whoever attacked her.”

Sarah Everard: 'Murder suspect' Met officer found via CCTV from bus camera | Daily Mail Online
11 March 2021
It is claimed Couzens was working at the American Embassy in Battersea on the day Miss Everard was taken.

Police arrested one of their own officers over the murder of Sarah Everard after a breakthrough from CCTV on a passing London bus ... it emerged today.

It was reported that neighbours noticed a Land Rover parked close to policeman Wayne Couzens' house in the historic town of Deal, and thought it was being watched by two men inside at around 5pm on Tuesday evening.

But it has been claimed today that Couzens, an armed diplomatic protection officer, worked a 2pm to 8pm shift guarding the US embassy close to Battersea Power station - less than three miles from where Miss Everard was last seen at 9.30pm.

The armed officer, who is part of the Met’s Parliamentary and Diplomatic Protection (PaDP) armed unit would have been picked up outside the embassy by a minibus and most likely taken to Charing Cross police station.

Once there, like all armed officers, he should have checked his firearm back into the armoury and headed to his locker to get changed.

He should not have gone home in full uniform. Instead, all officers are required to change into their civilian clothes.

MailOnline believes that the woods where the remains were found were known to him because Couzens' Ukrainian wife and their two children had visited for walks.
