Update on our search for Susan Waring:

Police searching for missing Susan Waring, 45, from Darwen have arrested a man on suspicion of her murder.

The 46-year-old was arrested this afternoon (Wednesday, March 20th) at an address in the town.

Searches are also taking place at a property in the Blackburn Road area.

It was initially thought that Susan was last seen on January 30th at around 10pm, leaving an address on Blackburn Road, Darwen. However, the last corroborated sighting of her was at a doctor’s surgery on James Street West on Wednesday, January 16th in the afternoon. Detectives are piecing together her subsequent movements.

No one has seen or heard from Susan for weeks which is very unusual. She is often in touch with her sister, and is an active Facebook user but has not logged on since towards the end of January.

If you know anything about her disappearance, you think you may have seen her either in the days leading up to her going missing or after January 16th, we need to speak to you as soon as possible as you may have vital information. Similarly, if you know anything at all you think could help, please let us know.

There had been previous reported sightings of Susan in the Dumbarton area of Scotland, however, detectives have been able to rule them out and do not believe them to be her.

Susan’s family have been informed of today’s development and are being supported by family liaison officers (FLOs). Our thoughts are with them at this incredibly sad and difficult time.

Anyone with information can call 101 quoting incident reference LC-20190320-0963. You can also report information to us online here: Public Portal

Alternatively, independent charity Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously on 0800 555111 or online at http://socsi.in/mWca7.

Man arrested as search for missing woman becomes murder investigation

Police are continuing their appeal for information over missing Bonhill fire victim Susan Waring.

The 45-year-old went missing from her home in Darwen area of Lancashire in England three weeks ago and brother Peter Waring says there is a chance she has returned to her former home in West Dunbartonshire.

Susan was rescued from a devastating fire at her home in Redburn, Bonhill 18 months ago and rushed to Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley.

She awoke from a coma nine days later and has been living in Darwen since.

We reported last March how Liam McCafferty, accused of trying to kill Susan by setting fire to her Redburn home, walked free from court after a jury returned a not proven verdict at the High Court in Glasgow.

The 28-year-old from Alexandria denied being involved and instead pinned the blame on another man.

UPDATE

Police investigating the disappearance of Darwen woman Susan Waring, 45, have released a CCTV image of a woman they believe could be her.

Detectives looking for Susan confirmed on Wednesday (20 March) that her disappearance is now being treated as a murder investigation.

A 46 year old man was arrested on suspicion of her murder. He has now been released under investigation pending further enquiries.

It was initially thought that Susan was last seen on January 30th 2019 at around 10pm, leaving an address on Blackburn Road, Darwen.

However, the last corroborated sighting of her was at a doctor’s surgery on James Street West on Wednesday, January 16th in the afternoon.

Detectives have been working to piece together her subsequent movements.

As a result of CCTV enquiries, we are looking into the possibility she may have been at Asda on School Street, Darwen at around 13:40 on Tuesday 29 January.

The woman who we believe to be Susan (pictured in the black hat and grey/silver jacket), was seen to be speaking to another woman (pictured carrying the umbrella).

We are keen to identify and speak to this woman as a potential witness as she could hold vital information.

Det Ch Insp Geoff Hurst from Lancashire’s Force Major Investigation Team (FMIT) said: “I have a team of detectives working hard to find out what has happened to Susan and where she may be.

“No one has seen or heard from Susan for weeks which is very unusual. She is often in touch with her sister, and is an active Facebook user but has not logged on since towards the end of January.

“I would like to thank the public for their support and reiterate my plea for anyone with information to come forward.

“We are treating this CCTV footage as a potential sighting of Susan and need anyone with information about the two people in the pictures to come forward.

“If you recognise the women, remember seeing them on that day or think you may be one of the women, please come forward.”

“Any information, no matter how small, could be important.”

Our thoughts remain with Susan’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult and sad time. They are receiving support from Family Liaison Officers (FLOs).

But the man was later released under investigation and all went quiet in the hunt for missing Susan - until posters started to pop up across Blackburn and Darwen. It is currently unknown who is responsible for placing the posters in shop windows and on lampposts.

Darwen councillor Roy Davies said he was fully supportive of the person’s efforts to track Susan down.

A police spokesman confirmed that an investigation into Susan’s disappearance is still ongoing, and anyone with information is urged to get in touch by calling 101 and quoting incident number 0936 of March 20.

Following consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service, police have now charged Alan Edwards with her murder and a number of other offences.

Edwards, 47, of Blackburn Road, Darwen, was arrested in March last year and released under investigation.

He was re-arrested on Wednesday (April 29) and has been charged with further alleged offences, confirm police.

The charges include 12 offences of assault, two wounding offences, an indecent assault against a girl aged under 14, one offence of making threats to kill, four offences of rape and one offence of causing a female 13 or over to engage in a penetrative sexual activity.

The alleged offences relate to three women and one girl between 1998 and 2019.

Alan Edwards, 48, was ordered to serve a minimum of 27 years at Preston Crown Court for the murder of Susan Waring, whose body has never been found.

[...]

Sentencing him to life, Mr Justice James Goss said during a "brief relationship" with the 45-year-old, Edwards had been "controlling and violent".

"You murdered Susan Waring, [though] precisely what you did and how is known only to you," he said.

"Susan Waring was a small, underweight, vulnerable 45-year-old woman.

"She was blind in one eye, suffered from poor health and had learning difficulties.

"There is no doubt she was frightened of and dominated by you."
