The family of Breezy Otteson, 17, and Riley Powell, 18 say the couple hasn't been heard from since December 30.

They say Otteson and Powell left Tooele on New Year's Eve around 9 a.m.. They were headed to Eureka, where Otteson lives, through Spanish Fork in a 1999 blue Jeep Cherokee.
Because the teens could be anywhere in between destinations, search parties were formed in Tooele and Juab County Friday morning.

A family member told News4Utah a crew looking for the teens Friday found writing in the snow that said "Stranded Walking". Police were unable to confirm or deny that information, but the family says that's where they will be focusing search efforts for now.

Police say there has been no internet, cell phone, or financial activity from either of the teens.

Anyone who might have been in the area during that time is asked to call 801-419-2050 or 385-505-3972.

According to this article, the kids have older model cell phones that require wi-fi to make calls, the area in which disappeared has no wi-fi coverage. That doesn't seem right to me though, I've never heard of a cell phone requiring wi-fi to make calls, has anyone else ever heard of that?

Maybe they have iPod Touches. I know that is the case with them, or parents have shut off data completely for some reason...

Crews were still searching for the pair as of 4:30 p.m.

Those who know them best stress how uncharacteristic this is for the two of them. They told News4Utah Powell likes to go off-roading and they believe something might have went wrong.

Oh my gosh, I hope they are found safe - they are so young :(

I've certainly never heard of it here in the UK and I've had a mobile phone since 1995.

From what I've read, many phones can be used wifi-only, providing there's a wifi signal, if the user doesn't have a carrier providing phone and internet services, ie no sim card in the phone.

Powell was known to enjoy going exploring off-road. Officials believe the couple may have gone on a dirt road and become stuck. Crews have been searching for Powell's late 1990s, early 2000s blue Jeep Cherokee along the dirt roads off state Route 36, the Five Mile Pass area and the East Tintic Mountains.

Powell's Jeep had more than 200,000 miles on it and the tires weren't great. Working in favor of the search crews, however, was the fact there hasn't been a significant snowstorm in the search area in the past week. And the ground has been frozen, so the chance of getting stuck in mud wasn't high.

The teens were driving a dark blue Jeep with license plate number 674VWV. They have old cellphones that only use Wi-Fi but do not have cellphone numbers attached to them.

I know of young people who use apps on wifi in order to make calls, like Facebook messenger. But with Facebook messenger, they could receive incoming calls and it sounds like these two didn't.

It's cold, I hope they are found safe and sound.

I thought all phoned have 911 capabilities at least. Even if the the phones have no minutes or have been disconnected for lack of payment, 911 or 411 or 611 are always available.

Reminds me of James and Katy Kim... Stay with the vehicle.

They should but only if there's any cell service. There are many areas without any coverage still in 2018.

My daughter had me download the WhatsApp when she flew out of the country. We used it to communicate via talk and text without using data.

Otteson’s aunt, Amanda Hunt has set up a Facebook page called “Searching for Breezy and Riley,” to post the latest information on the search.
Hunt posted late Saturday evening: “Another day has passed without any answers or leads as to where these teens went. “We had numerous people out searching on their own today. Thank you. Please continue praying for their safe return.”

The Air Response Foundation posted on its Facebook page Friday: “Long day. Covered hundreds of square miles and over 30 hours flight time between five all volunteer pilots on a search today. Wish we had news.
“There was also a veritable army of searchers on the ground. People still love other people in this world.”

I hate to think that these kids are running out of time, but they are. Unless they actually took off on a traveling adventure, which I’ll be hoping to hear.

Teens still missing after officials recover Jeep in Juab County

Powell’s Jeep was located Thursday near Cherry Creek Reservoir in Juab County, Juab County Sheriff’s Office officials said via Facebook.

There were no signs of either teenager, though. Search efforts for the pair will continue, and investigators are following up on multiple leads, the sheriff’s office said.

Officials found the Jeep out of sight of the roadway. A Department of Public Safety air patrol crew located the vehicle.
Cadaver dogs and search and rescue crews searched the area.

The Jeep was locted one mile south of Cherry Creek Reservoir on a road that was hidden in trees. The vehicle has two flat tires and all of the windows were down, but there are no signs of foul play at this time. Cadaver dogs were released with no indication of the kids being in the area.

The video at this link (interview with Juab County Sheriff Anderson) is interesting. With two flat tires, the jeep wouldn't have gone far, but it doesn't sound like it was stuck. Is this something more than they first thought?

Much appreciation to the SAR team and the civil air patrol. They've been working tirelessly to locate Breezy and Riley.
