I still have a little hope that Caylee is alive, although most would argue. It's just hope..With that being said, I just want to know what anyone knows about these so called death rings..Can it appear on hair if it's fallen out of a LIVE person's head and has been there for a long time? Can it appear on hair that is still attached to a live person? If anyone knows a little about it, please post.. Or if you have any articles, etc..Just very curious!

From what I was told by someone who works with the U.T. Body farm through school is they (bands) will never be on a person who is alive. The person has to be dead for the particular bacteria to grow on the hair shaft. That bacteria won't grow on a live specimen regardless if it was pulled out, cut, whatever.

The bacteria evidently comes for the dead scalp and forms the ring/rings around the hair follicle.

It sounds like the rings are basically decomp in the part of the follicle that was once alive. I don't know how anyone can dispute that and the mitochondrial dna of the hair follicle that shows it is Caylee's since Casey is still alive.

Great question! I've been curious about this as well. I'm wondering if any cases used this type of testing so far. Also I wonder if (just for sake of reasonable doubt) a small chunk of your scalp was attached to hair from a live person if the bands would still show? HMmmm

From what I saw on NG, with the specialist guy, he said that the banding (anagen banding? I think) doesn't happen on a live person, but that there could be other things that cause it after the hair comes out of the head. But there is no way that the hair could have come from a live Caylee with that band on it. No, I don't have a link, but I'll bet it's in the media thread. If I find it, I'll come back and add the link.

adding forensic will help bypass the rock band junk.

That tells something which I did not know, and that the bands and the deterioration can determine the length of time since the death. That is VERY interesting and why we may not be getting more info on this.

I found this (scroll all the way down), http://www.fbi.gov/hq/lab/fsc/backis...esearch01b.htm, which I find makes this evidence not so conclusive : The presence of a dark band (Figure 81) at the root end may indicate it was shed postmortem.

Keyword being may..If it was 100% conclusive, they would (or should) have said "the presence of a dark band at the root end indicates that it was shed postmortem."

THe expert that I saw did say that it has been under researched so they don't know as much as they should about the banding. But then again, he was also contacted by Baez first. So you never know.

If you are referring to the expert on Nancy Grace, I saw him too.. But I read so much conflicting information, that I just needed to see what everyone thought or knew!

And it's incredibly difficult to find in google! But those links that were posted were really good! But I agree, everyone says something different.. I watch a lot of court tv, oops I forgot they changed it, meant to say tru tv, and I never really heard anything about these "death bands" unless I did and just forgot about it..
