Investigators don’t know how long the woman had been there, but believe it was within a year of her being discovered. While a reconstruction of her face was done by experts at the time, they do not know the color of her hair, skin or eyes...

A review at the time by an anthropologist determined that the woman was about 5 feet 6 inches tall, between 45 and 60 years old, and had likely given birth. There is an 80 percent likelihood that the woman was Caucasian. She was found wearing size 12 brown pants.

They're asking anyone who has a mother, grandmother, or great-grandmother missing since about 1981 to call Columbia County LE.

If she was between 45 and 60 years of age, I don't think she would have looked as "old" as this reconstruction suggests. She was only middle-aged...and the lower end of the range they're giving is still quite young.

She may not even have had gray/white hair, yet. It could have been black, blonde, salt and pepper, etc.

This might be why she isn't being identified. People might be passing over a missing person who just looks "too young" to resemble the reconstruction.

That said, I feel like this could be a case of elder/disability abuse. Clearly she wasn't "known" or "missed" by the public(not working, not socializing, etc.)...something might have kept her shut-in for a while. I feel like she might have come to the area to be cared for by relatives(or to care for them, herself), and they killed her.

In Wisconsin there are actually two towns named "Caledonia". This case is closer to Madison, WI in Columbia County. The other "Caledonia" is between Milwaukee and Racine in Racine County....

The age is off, but Marie Jost was last seen two counties away. The exact date she was last seen is ambiguous at best, and LE suspects her family murdered her or concealed her death:

Marie was only reported missing in 2012 when the SSA tried to verify her existence, as she was over 100 years of age, so this case wouldn't have been on LE's radar when Jane Doe was found in 1982.

This summer, Columbia County worked with the FBI Crime Laboratory in Quantico, VA in hopes of using DNA technology to compare her against missing persons who are currently in the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS). A DNA profile was obtained however it received no matches when compared to the current missing persons file. Her DNA has now been entered in the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS)...

The FBI was also able to use current technology and create a facial approximation of what she looked like back in 1982...

The sheriff’s office has followed up on more than 50 leads but she still remains unidentified.

That is true. She was found just off Petra Road in Caledonia, Columbia County. And the other Caledonia, in Racine County, Wisconsin, also has several unsolved murders (Stephanie Casberg, Racine Jane Doe,...) This Caledonia, in Columbia County, also has an unsolved disappearance just two miles west in adjoining Sauk County.

Robert Lewis Christian was last seen and went missing during a trip from Madison to Baraboo on September 16, 1977 near Durward's Glen OLRG, Ltd., W11876 McLeisch Road, Baraboo, WI 53913. He was last seen going east. His vehicle was found on Tower Road (which turns into McLeisch Road southwest of Baraboo)

Looking at DonaMae Bayerl. Went missing from Muskego, WI in 1979. That's much closer to Racine County Caledonia (18 miles) than to Columbia County Caledonia (127 miles). Stats are iffy but y'all know how that can go.

I haven't found any articles which say exactly where on Petra Road she was found.

She was found about 60 feet off Petra Road in the town of Caledonia, between Konkel and Blacklock roads near Highway 78.

What if the family didn't know the woman was missing at the time the body was found, they just assumed that they'd moved away and lost touch? Maybe there were no family members to report her missing (other than the killer)?

What if they weren't reported missing until several years after the jane doe was found and then misreported the physical characteristics?

Who would think to match up a body found in 1982 with a person reported missing, let's say, three years later in July, 1985? If there was no DNA to be taken because the person was still missing, how could they match it up with a jane doe found in 1982?

What a great way to get away with murder! I have just a scenario to fit this case. Let me know if it's plausible after I lay it all out in my next few posts.

The scenario will start with an actual unrelated murder that happened way back in October 1940.

Hugo Baerwolf, Sr., age 67, a Ft. Winnebago, WI farmer, slashed the throat of a female bar owner/bartender, Mrs. Elizabeth Agnes "Betty" Adams, at her Club 51 bar 5 miles north of Portage, Wisconsin over a dispute about money she owed him and a con job he said she was part of as reported in the Madison Capital Times October 23, 1940 in the above article. The article said she was nearly decapitated. There was also a romantic relationship going on between the two according to the papers. Baerwolf's wife had just died the year before after a short illness. She was survived by nine grown children and the widower.

In February of 1941, he was found guilty and sentenced to 2 to 4 years at Waupun State Prison in Wisconsin. This must have had an effect on their children.

Fast forward in time to July, 1985, in Adams, WI, where Hugo Baerwolf, Jr's. wife, Lorraine Baerwolf, disappears from their home without a trace. Her husband was the last one to see her alive.

Now come some interesting points...

The article reports Lorraine was 60 years old, 5 feet three inches tall and weighs 135 pounds.

The Caledonia Jane Doe was Caucasian, 5 feet 6 inches tall, between 45 and 60 years old, and had likely given birth. There is an 80 percent likelihood that the woman was Caucasian. All points between the two women are right on except for the 3 inch difference in height, which could have been misstated to the police or mistakenly copied down as three inches instead of six inches.

The last point I'd like to make is contained in the article below. Hugo Baerwolf, Sr's. sister, Minnie Baerwolf, married Charles Paske. Where did they live? Mr. Paske's Caledonia farm. Lorraine Baerwolf was from Leeds, WI, which is right below Caledonia.

So, do you think this theory has any merit? Is there a possibility that Caledonia Jane Doe and Lorraine Baerwolf could be one and the same?

Police have never released any information on this disappearance. How come?

there is no mention of Lorraine Baerwolf.

The last newspaper article on missing women in Wisconsin that ever mentioned her case was two years later in Madison's Wisconsin State Journal on July 30, 1987.

We can pretty well assume no DNA was obtained from any family member back in 1985 (around the time DNA samples were first being taken), so there isn't any in any database. There are no mentions of her by family members on the internet.

This all means that absolutely no one is looking for her. She's totally forgotten by not only local, state and federal law enforcement, possibly by her family, but for sure by the media and the public. Lorraine Baerwolf fell through the cracks, big time.

This may be one of Wisconsin's most perfect crimes.

Dona Mae Bayerl is listed as a rule out.
I believe they have an error in their description of the pants that were found near by. Described as size 12 "Chesterfield" brown pants, the clothing label actually says "Christenfeld". They would have sold these pants at the local feed & supply store.
This pair of brown Christenfeld pants may be similar to what the UID was wearing.

Just wanted to add, that a size 12 would make this woman approximately 150 lbs.

I hate to throw another curve ball into the sleuthing of this case...but if my fellow sleuthers please also consider "hunting land"
I used the google Maps to just see how far our hunting land is from the doe, and its only 40 miles away.
This could be a case from somewhere else in the state and the Doe was dumped on/near or on the way up to their hunting land "up north" as we call it in Wisconsin

Circumstances of Discovery
A passerby discovered the victim's remains about 60 feet of Petra Road, near Highway 78, not far from I-90/94. It was determined that she died from blunt force trauma to the head. At the time, there were no missing persons reports in southern Wisconsin matching the victim. Investigators believed she may have been dumped at the location. She was buried in Wyocena on September 1, 1987 as a Jane Doe. On April 21, 2014, the Columbia County Sheriff's Office, with the assistance of the FBI, reopened the case and her body was exhumed in hopes of collecting DNA, which was successfully obtained. Investigators believe she and her killer may not have been native to the area where she was found.
