Shaun Goyette said Stewart’s disappearance hasn’t been ruled a criminal matter but did say he doesn’t believe Stewart would just walk away and not contact anyone.

“We are still considering it a missing persons,” he told 27 News. “The issue that we have is we have no concrete evidence to raise it to a criminal investigation.”

The Department of Justice – Division of Criminal Investigations was brought in to help.

“They’ve done a bigger investigation then we have, and maybe they have more information or different avenues of where to go,” Goyette explained. “So, it’s just an extra resource that we use.”

Goyette said they have some discrepancies in statements from interviews but nothing that raises the case to a criminal investigation.

“We were doing other search warrants, phone records, residential search warrants, and just nothing has turned up,” he added.

Police have been searching for 43-year-old Leya Stewart since she disappeared on Independence day. The Juneau County Sheriff’s Office has called in the state’s Department of Criminal Investigation, but no one has heard from Stewart in months. The state has issued three alerts in the search for Stewart, but all have come back empty. Her family says they’re not giving up hope

Stewart’s family believes something happened to her while she was in the area of her friend’s house.

“The people she was with just dropped her stuff off and said that there was an argument and that was the end of it. We knew that when she had no contact after a few days that there was a problem,” Engelman said.

Kathleen Engelman is Stewart’s aunt and she said the family receives new tips about their missing niece, sister and mother every day, but the police are not looking into these tips.

“I literally feel like if we’re going to find Leya, we’re going to have to do it ourselves,” Engelman said. “Because Juneau County doesn’t care. They’re not out there searching.”

According to Juneau County Detective Shawn Goyette, this is still listed as a missing person’s case because they have not found any evidence to suggest that Stewart is dead.

”A lot of the information we’re getting is people that have potential theories as to what they believe happened to Leya. Unfortunately, we follow up on it, we investigate it, but we’re still looking for that one piece that somebody that knows where Leya ended up or where she is now,” said Goyette.
