The problem, they say, is Trumpy's boyfriend, Derek Hammer, is in jail facing charges for guns, drugs and domestic abuse, and since those charges involve Trumpy, they fear he'll never help find her.

“He won’t ever cooperate,” said BA, the father of two of Trumpy’s children.

BA said he believes it would be a mistake for anyone to post Hammer's bond, adding that the allegations of violence in the September incident and Hammer's prison record give him cause for alarm.

"If he gets out, we will be looking over our shoulders nonstop," BA said.

DK, Trumpy's friend, agrees. He said Melissa told him days before she disappeared that she was afraid of Hammer.

"She was terrified to go back to her house," DK said.

MONROE — Derek Hammer will be arraigned this week on three disorderly conduct charges and is facing his first jury trial since the disappearance in 2021 of his girlfriend Melissa Trumpy of Monticello.

Crime Stories With Nancy Grace on the case.

It’s been nearly six months since mom of three, Melissa Trumpy, has been seen. Her disappearance came shortly after she and her boyfriend at the time, 35-year-old Derek Hammer, were arrested at Trumpy’s home in Monticello, Wisconsin, for drug-related crimes. Trumpy had reportedly agreed to cooperate with investigators and serve as a witness against Hammer.

Since Trumpy vanished, Hammer was arrested for alleged bail jumping. Hammer served prison time in Nevada for battery by strangulation and possession of an explosive device, according to prison records. Authorities have not named Hammer as an investigative target in Trumpy’s disappearance.

  • Hammer is scheduled for a June 15 trial on felony charges of maintaining a drug house, illegal possession of a firearm, possession with intent to deliver cocaine and THC, disorderly conduct, and domestic abuse.
  • He is also facing trial for alleged bail jumping and fleeing and eluding (the high-speed chase in Trumpy’s car). A July 5 trial date has been set.

The Illinois sheriff’s office said that it believes Trumpy was visiting Hammer in Shannon, Illinois, around the time she went missing and that her vehicle was found later on a road in Stephenson County, Illinois.

The sheriff’s office detailed that multiple law enforcement agencies and volunteer groups have been involved in the search for Trumpy since her disappearance. These departments include the Illinois State Police, FBI, Federal Fish and Wildlife Police and Green County Sheriff’s Office in Wisconsin.

Sept 28

GREEN COUNTY, Wis. (WTVO) — It’s been nearly a year since a Monticello, Wisconsin woman went missing from a northern Illinois town, leaving her three children wondering what happened to her.

“My daughter was just looking at pictures of her mom the other night and (was) crying uncontrollably,” said Benny Affrunti, the father of two of Trumpy’s children, ages 9 and 7.

Affrunti said he knows there is nothing he can do to erase what his children are feeling. He can only comfort them as they grieve the loss of their mother, who was with them one day and gone the next.

“We’re in contact with agencies in Illinois, to look for ways to help, or perhaps something that we missed,” said Green County Sheriff Jeff Skatrud. “We haven’t forgotten.”

[...]

“From day one, when Derek met Melissa, he isolated her from everyone,” said Affrunti. “She paid with her life for protecting him.”

Affrunti describes the pair’s relationship as volatile. Court records show Hammer has an extensive criminal history, including domestic violence and battery. A day after Trumpy’s disappearance, Hammer’s family hired lawyers.

“I don’t think I’ve ever met a worse human being in my entire life,” said Affrunti. “There’s no gentle way to explain what’s happened.”
