You’re probably right. She did look GI Janeish—a pretty lady in her army green dress and shaved head. Not a bad thing—just a striking resemblance. This is how they form their jokes.
Will should be happy it wasn't Joan Rivers up there delivering the lines! Really, now that the dust has settled, it's just really sad at many levels.

Amateur opinion and speculation

Are we really going to declare that comics should never comment on someone's appearance? Are we really that fragile and sensitive now?

I guess because I am married to a comedy writer, it really bothers me that people cannot take a joke anymore. We take everything so seriously and have become so soft and fragile, over 'micro' aggressions.

I do not think it makes society a better place, to take comedy and humour, so seriously. To me, comedy 'makes light of things.' It shines a light on that which is taboo but has a ring of truth to it. We should all be able to laugh at ourselves if we want to know the truth about our situation. JMO

all imo

It wasn’t a joke.

It was nasty comment to who he knows is a sensitive woman who spent time and money to get ready to come to a very important occasion with her family.

CR's typical nasty abusers come back after hitting home with a zinger “it’s just a joke”.

IMO

It is up to the receiver to decide if it is funny or hurtful not us or CR.

If the receiver, Will in this case, is hurt it wasn’t funny and the “jokester” is nothing more than a mean bully.

A comedy writer finding their audience “can’t take a joke” needs to get the message they are not funny.

WS is an actor not a deity or statesman or diplomat. A mere human with his many admitted faults and aspirations.

Age is irrelevant for those in a life long struggle.

They ALL spend a lot of time and money getting ready. Months and months of planning, fittings, design, hair and makeup--it's kind of ridiculous and somewhere along the line the hosts started making fun of it all. I think it goes too far, but this joke was not out of bounds IMO. They all know how it goes. I'd like to see them stop with the personal jokes altogether but still nobody should be assaulting the hosts.

Yeah, especially because, you know, it was about hairstyles. Not, for eg, about their marriage or something that actually matters in the world.

JS must be a very confident woman to be sitting up front with her Oscar nominated husband, wearing glamorous clothing and expensively made up face.
Still, she proudly wore a freshly shaved head (although she has access to the finest of wigs) for all the cameras and world to see.
Wondering if she is mortified by all the attention she has NOW received, or was Will's wife upstaged by him along with everyone else ? imo.

Yes, many people react that way.

On the other hand, isn't the preoccupation with both male and female hair loss pure vanity? It's normal for young people to be vain about their appearance, it helps them to find a partner. However, I admire people who can let go of the preocupation with their external appearance as they age and mature. They acknowledge that they're not young, they don't need to look young. Many men make jokes about their receding hairline, and I appreciate that. Others choose to shave their head, and that's a good look too.

I hope shaved heads for women become more widely accepted, I think of how much simpler it would be to not stress about hair...and the money I'd save!

I thought she looked pretty mortified when her husband marched up on stage. She just rolled her eyes at the GI Jane joke. She'll defend him now, I'm sure. But I bet she's not happy.

How was it a nasty comment? Not everyone knew she had alopecia. I doubt he did. He seemed confused by WS’s sudden turn from laughter to rage.

Also, she’s sensitive? She just talked about how she doesn’t care what people think about her hair.

Seriously, people need to get over themselves. I for one am sick of all this fake PC crap. Where did all the real celebrities go? You know half of what they say they don't believe, and are just scared of saying how it really is for fear of being cancelled.

Will Smith isn't sorry for what he did and we all know it. It's all about damage limitation at this point. Pathetic. Stand up and say how you really feel instead of pandering to the masses.

No-one is perfect and they need to stop pretending they are.

Chris R is a comedian. Comedians hit below the belt, it's what makes them funny. And damn, we all need some humour in our lives.

<modsnip>Will probably shouldn't lose his award but he certainly shouldn't be allowed to attend any more of the shows going forward. Sorry but this was violence and if there isn't proper security, which it seems there wasn't, he should not be allowed to attend. Not to mention he hasn't shown any true remorse that I can see.

IMO, it was one big publicity stunt, might have been approved by the Academy, it certain needs a boost, Jada’s show needs it, Chris Rock does too and Will? He’s the king of the castle and does what he likes.
It will be interesting the type of work to be offered after this ‘stunt’, to Jada, Chris and Will.
The filming should have been cut the moment Will made his way to the stage, and security should have pulled Will to the side, funny how neither happened.

I didn't think Chris's joke was funny, however to turn the Oscars into the Jerry Springer show is so low class. Chris could have been harmed if he had fallen. I am also so surprised that security was nowhere in sight. I wish that security had taken WS out of the awards altogether. I don't care about him getting the Oscar. Hand it to him out of the window, but ban him for several years. This is not something we want modeled for our children. It's the real decline of western civilization.

Jim Carrey ‘sickened’ by Hollywood response to Will Smith, Chris Rock slap - National | Globalnews.ca
70c8fc80

''Carrey, 60, told CBS’ Gayle King he was “sickened” not only by Smith’s actions, but by Hollywood celebrities who still gave Smith a standing ovation for his Best Actor win for King Richard.
“Hollywood is just spineless en masse and it felt like this is a really clear indication that we aren’t the cool club anymore,” said Carrey.
Carrey said Smith should have been escorted from the venue after the slap, going so far as to add that he should have been arrested.''

“I’d have announced this morning that I was suing Will for $200 million because that video is going to be there forever. It’s going to be ubiquitous,” Carrey said.

“That insult is gonna last a very long time,” added Carrey. “If you want to yell from the audience and show disapproval or say something on Twitter [that’s fine]. But you do not have the right to walk up on stage and smack somebody in the face because they said words.”

CR has a history of mocking JPS. He knew. JPS has spoken many times in articles and on Red Table Talk about being terrified about her hair loss. Since 2018.

Chris Rock did a documentary on black hair including a black women with Alopecia.

You don’t play about black women’s hair, he knows that.

There are plenty of articles about why if one doesn’t already know about black hair dysphoria.

During his 2016 opening Academy Awards monologue, Rock made fun of Pinkett Smith for boycotting the Oscars because of the “Oscars so white,” turmoil. “Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties. I wasn’t invited,” Rock said.

This year’s Academy Awards marked Pinkett Smith’s first major appearance without hair. And it was a big one as her husband was up for the best actor Oscar for his portrayal of Venus and Serena Williams’ father in the film, King Richard.

I’m sure as Pinkett Smith got dressed in her amazing emerald green Jean Paul Gaultier and Glenn Martens of Diesel and Y Project ruched gown, there was a lot of fretting about the Oscars red carpet.

Pinkett Smith has said on her streaming series Red Table Talk and on Instagram that she has always been vain about having hair. How would people receive her? Could she be stunning with a bald head?

For the record, she was.

Rock seems to enjoy hitting Black women below the belt.

In his 2009 documentary Good Hair, Rock spent the entire film making jokes about Black women’s hair.
Chris Rock’s joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair loss was cruel. Will wasn’t having it.

Rock’s tawdry words on Sunday may have been a tactless joke, but I instantly recognised the look on Jada’s face when those words were uttered. The palpable feeling of all the air leaving the room whilst your skin is on fire, all eyes on you waiting for you to react. I recognised that frozen smile, the roll of eyes. The clasping of hands while she continued to keep her composure.

Black women's hair is too often the butt of jokes

WS is unlucky he wasn’t charged. He needs to have consequences like anyone else for his own well being.

CR’s “joke” was about as funny as an outhouse breeze.

All IMO

IMO, Chris Rock should be acknowledged for deescalating the situation after being slapped and I don't think he knew the hit was coming. A knee jerk reaction could have resulted in an actual fight. Chris remained calm, professional at his work event and did not engage in any further jokes or spout off at the mouth. Well done. It's been years since I've watched any award show but the host is known to roast people, it's what happens. I don't believe Chris Rock took a personal jab at Jada either.

Will Smith, IMO, appeared unhinged, weak, almost like people do when involved in road rage incidents. The problem that night was not Chris Rock it's whatever BS Will Smith is dealing with. IMO

I feel very strongly about this. Regardless of feelings hurt it is NEVER ok to physically assault anyone. It most definitely calls for consequences because it will become ‘where do you draw the line’. If they let this go it sends a message to many victims of assault. If it’s ok for a man to slap another man does that apply to a man assaulting a female, a colleague, a friend, an officer, a child, a judge, a school teacher, etc who may say something that offends the them. We are not a barbaric society. People are going to say things that may hurt our feelings. The next time a child makes fun of another are they going to think since it was ok on TV it’s okay for them to hit the offender?

There have been far worse statements made from previous host. Chris’s statement was referring to the Demi Moore movie, in essence saying Jada could be the next one. Apparently Will has an issue with Chris that he reacted to. Taking it up privately and respectfully would be the place and way to handle that.

I’ve made a verbal complaint (via voicemail) to the Academy. I’m not sure if it’s okay to share the number here but anyone is welcome to PM me for it.
