I know this has been asked before, but the answer I saw I really did not understand. When a jury is presented with a charge that has degrees of severity, like murder, must they only decide on the charge presented by the prosecutor or can they choose an even lesser level of guilt?

I've wondered if after Caylee died/was killed, Casey was already thinking up the "kidnapped" story and placed the duct tape on her mouth/face in order to make it look like a botched kidnapping.
The problem is that, in this jury's minds, it was not enough to meet the charge of first degree murder. While I agree that they should have deliberated harder/longer and at least tried for a lesser charge, none of us can arm chair quarterback their decision.
