Yes, you're right about the viewing rooms at some crematoriums. In the Hindu religion, I believe it is the oldest son that is given the honor of hitting the switch. I'm sure other religions may observe this type of custom as well.

I asked the owner of a crematorium in New Jersey the same question about cremating the skeletonized remains of a child and he said that they would have to be cremated as bones not heated in a retort, would clog the pulverizer.
The second vatican council in the 1960's lifted the cremation ban provided the body was present during the funeral and cremated afterward.
There has since been additional updates regarding the Catholic Church and Cremation.
