I think he may have thought a facetime call would not be able to be traced in the same way as a normal call as it uses the internet, more like VOIP. IMO

I can't stop thinking about earlier reports before she was confirmed as dead, on the 1st of May when an unidentified body was found this was reported So there must have been something from the very beginning to get them worried.
