I agree with the speculation that an "accident" occurred at home and there was a "freak out" moment that initially led to a huge story. Maybe that is why the sheriff is trying so hard to protect the parents, maybe he sees that this was not intentional and they were just scared. (Just a theory)

I do not have the source but I did read somewhere that was a misprint originally a reporter typed "boys" instead of "boy's" and that got turned into "with another male on foot". I believe something like WUSA (?) was the source if the mistype.
