They should look at the case of Donna Hanson, age 30, missing from San Diego in March 1986. I can't access the article now, but she was married to a man who took an uncharacteristic drive out to the Anza-Borrego region a few days after she was last seen. The timeline and age definitely fit.

This is crazy! I have not heard any mention of this in the local media. Putting in the GPS coordinates gives a better estimate of the location. Looks like the decedent was found right off the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). Many people hike the PCT from South to North starting in April.
