The confusion is the backpack-it signifies to me that Lily thought she was going to school, but according to the adults, they weren't going to school that day. Unsure if called off for school. Added that everything seemed to be happening right around school time.

Maybe Lily couldn't find Jack and came in to rouse them up? Finally she went to look for him?

I feel if they got lost, there would of been a scent. The scent stopped at the driveway. This we know. So that points to they didn't leave on foot.
