Yes, I think if he had been taken away by other children, they most certainly would have found them in their search, it was just an interesting point that was brought up in the podcast that I hadn't thought of before.
The latest episode (March 8) brought up some really good points. Could Michael have been taken by other children? Similar to the James Bulger case (where two 10 year olds abducted and killed a 2 year old child).
It's pure speculation, but I don't believe the DNA has been retested. I think in this case, it's pretty straightforward that Dennis Melvin Howe committed this crime. I'd be curious to know if this was a random crime of opportunity or if he had seen her before and targeted her.
