An expired flare burns shorter and/or less brightly than it should. Damp flare cartridges either swell not fitting into the gun anymore, or fail to discharge. All of the listed malfunctions would be immediately noticeable for Brian.
If the flares burnt bright and/or long enough that Brian did...
I thought it is a common knowledge <modsnip> that the domestic violence victims, for many reasons, find it very hard to end the relationship with their abusers.
<modsnip>
Who said there was a motive or any planning? Just another booze fueled outburst of violence that went too far. There is a thin line between choking someone non-fatally in rage and a murder by manual strangulation.

Might be other way around. They shot the 17yo, the gun malfunctioned, so they had to switch to the knife. From the injuries it seems that no matter what weapon they used, their intention was to kill. As in it wasn't frenzy, they went into that house planning to kill anyone that could recognise them.
Let's not forget that the case was dismissed due to lack of evidence showing who started the fight. Let's also not pretend that the reactive abuse does not exist.

That "eye witness" is a suspect in criminal investigation and has a rich history of domestic violence, threats to throw Lynette overboard included. So his word should not be uncritically believed and accepted as truth.
The Bahamian police doesn't seem to be sure it was just an accident. Ditto for The US Coast Guard and the people who know these waters like their own backyard. Lynette's loved ones do not seem to believe BH's version and they provided actual evidence of the physical abuse BH inflicted on Lynette...
I want to know how it happened that BH lost in these gusts of wind his wife, her dry bag, the dinghy key and one oar, but not the hat. He is not a Victorian lady, he's not nailing that hat with multiple hair pins to a huge updo underneath. So how?
Why exactly are we focusing on the youtuber lady and the way she interviewed Jim, when we don' know the exact time Brian and Lynette entered the water? Without that knowledge we do not even know how relevant Jim's statement is.
First articles referred to the person that was in the homestead with kids as a grandmother, without mentioning a name. Some people jumped to the conclusion it was Josie, BUT the media referred to her very consequently and from the beginning, as a grandparent, never grandmother.
