I also suspect that he was possibly making a run for Mexico. They aren't willing to extradite fugitives back to the U.S. if the death penalty is on the table (which he may very well be facing depending upon the circumstances and evidence).

She won't be able to appeal her verdict on the basis of her attorney's wanting to quit during the penalty phase. If she continues to play her predictable hand, she'll have an automatic appeal by virtue of the DP.
Even if the judge granted the DT's motion to withdraw, it would only have bearing on the penalty phase since the guilty and aggravation phases are complete. As KN would say "it doesn't many any sense" to switch lineups for the penalty phase so he can't be shocked that the motion was denied.
