I agree with that, too. Of course I would like to have seen an arrest, but how many victims would he have had between then and now. It is scary to think about it.
Pam Milam's case has been resolved after 47 years. Her killer has been identified as Jeffrey Lynn Hand.

I agree that this is now pointing to the Bertha that is featured in these articles. As well, I think it can be determined that she simply walked away, due to untreated mental illness. The only way we can try and get a resolution is through loads of documents.
I went through this thread because I was thinking of this case. I did notice some things some other things. In the 1910 US Census, Bertha is listed as having been born in Ohio, not W.V. When you compare that record, and the one from Find A Grave, there are some very big similarities -such as...
I suspect foul play is the biggest factor. So many questions, though, need to be answered. A lot of lost documents and memories can and is, hampering this.
It's funny you mention her applying for one under Croft or Vangilder. I did find one for Mary J Croft 7/11/1911 (someone else found that, too - it's in a previous post) and I did do a search for Vangilder, Mary J (that one didn't turn up). I am thinking of multiple things, but I need to sort...
