I mean that JH could have gone to an attorney and filed a petition with the court to have AJ's name changed to Hadsell. Written consent from anyone else who had legal rights would have been necessary. But, they would not have had to go through an adoption process to change the name.

Very true, but JH would have had the legal right to just change AJ's last name. An adoption would not need to take place. But, I'm still not clear as to which one actually occurred.
