Family wants to keep life support for girl brain dead after tonsil surgery #7

ITA that the precedent already set - letting the family fight taking her off the ventilator - is a little scary and a step in the wrong direction, but I DON'T think that they would be at all successful in fighting an autopsy if the coroner finds a need for it. While I would totally believe they...

Family wants to keep life support for girl brain dead after tonsil surgery #7

BBM. I could definitely see that happening here, but I think that would be pretty cut and dry that it can't happen! Can you imagine if families could refuse autopsies where they've been ordered by the coroner? That would be a massive loophole in cases where a family might be suspected of...

And the Catholic Church believes brain death is death as well, so it seems these operations and continuing to give medical care to someone who has suffered brain death goes against the teachings of the Catholic Church. JMO I wish we had information on the facility. I'm truly surprised it...

Family wants to keep life support for girl brain dead after tonsil surgery #7

I'm a little confused about how they'll proceed because the mom agreed to be responsible, but what's the scope of that? I think pain and suffering will be limited to time at CHO because once she was legally dead, their continued efforts are their own choosing and basically outside the law. I...

Family wants to keep life support for girl brain dead after tonsil surgery #7

How convenient that Dolan just happens to be on the board of a group fighting the 250k cap....considering that by his own account he contacted the family, I'm going to have to disagree with Uncle O that he did it completely out of the goodness of his heart. I understand we all look out for our...

Family wants to keep life support for girl brain dead after tonsil surgery #6

This is nothing really new, but I just keep thinking how terrible it's going to be for this family when her heart does stop. I guess it's possible they'll have peace that they did everything they could, but IMO the more likely scenario is that all the grief they haven't been letting themselves...

Family wants to keep life support for girl brain dead after tonsil surgery #6

I think they gave as much info as they could to the media. The reports from the doctor do show that parts of her body are decomposing/deteriorating, such as her brain decomposing now. It's also my understanding that they were willing to let the family move her but it had to be in...

Family wants to keep life support for girl brain dead after tonsil surgery #6

My concern is that it's also misleading the public at large and leading to this idea that brain dead people can recover. Playing this whole thing out in the media and then making claims that she's doing better and will hopefully make a full recovery? Make it quite hard for future parents to let...

Family wants to keep life support for girl brain dead after tonsil surgery #6

Sigh. I just like how the "request for privacy" means we get these misleading and one-sided announcements and no actual information. If you really want privacy, please stop with the rosy status updates. :banghead: MOO

I truly believe it is, honestly. But we may not have any idea who the doctor was or where this was done. I'm hopeful that the coroner, courts, etc. know, and I personally hope we see some ramifications, because performing medical procedures on dead bodies is a scary thing. JMO.

Family wants to keep life support for girl brain dead after tonsil surgery #6

I'm trying to step away and I just can't! This makes me indescribably mad. IMO there should be ZERO talk about malpractice, particularly that CHO had a motive to KILL a child, when we have no details about this case. Those are some pretty serious accusations and the hospital has not been...

Family wants to keep life support for girl brain dead after tonsil surgery #6

I work with some pretty dark stuff, and I didn't think there could ever be a news story that made me step back and say no more. I think I've just been proven wrong. This is just too much for me. Surgery on a child who has been deceased for nearly a month...it's just so sad and so wrong, IMO. I...

Family wants to keep life support for girl brain dead after tonsil surgery #5

I definitely agree with compassion and understanding. I think hers is a grief reaction. But I don't know that more time would help, and I can't say for sure what the hospital did/did not do. There's a reasonable accommodation time for families to come to grips, but if the family can't afford to...

Well, because it's law, we're all charged with full knowledge of it. Not knowing isn't an excuse in the eyes of the law. I think this case goes to show more people need to be educated about brain death and be aware of it, but the moral of the story is our lawmakers make laws and we can challenge...

No, we do not need to sign anything about the brain death law upon admittance to the hospital. It is just the law that has been passed by our legislature and that we are all required to follow. Most states chose not to include a religious exemption in their similar laws, so there is no exception...
