The barns in that area are the kind where most of the riders work a day job, then get off work and ride their horses. To get the most people/horses into the parks, makes sense to do it later in the day.

Lurker and horseperson chiming in here... like most cowboys, he was not wearing a safety helmet, which greatly increases the chances for serious head injury. While it is certainly possible to be gravely injured in other ways riding, head injuries are entirely too common...
