I've showed my mate who is an ex Telstra tech the diagrams and he's pretty confident it's not phone related. No crossed wires in a pillar setup as the other posters have alluded to.

So take this with a grain of salt but fresh off the grapevine, apparently the victim of the 1988 break in was re-interviewed recently and provided police with the details of their man. I'm wondering if this means he was a neighbour or at least lived very close.

Yeah not much over but definitely a good wedge for the work involved. His place in 2000 can't have been much over $100,000 to purchase you wouldn't think. Edit: Purchase price was $135k in 2000.
