    Odd they are there early, at most criminal trials they keep the Defendants in the small holding cell off the main chamber until just before.

    I know, I was making a joke. The official reason truly is that it can be seen as prejudicial or inflammatory to a judge or jury (depending on trial circumstances) and that it can impede a Defendant's right to a fair trial.
