The friend of Jay that supposedly drowned (in freezing cold December Delaware water) went missing the same time Jay did. How closely was this possible connection looked into?

How was Michael acting days prior to his disappearance? It appears that Michael left his personal belongings behind, suggesting he was planning to return.
