I grew up in Cortez, CO which is about 40 miles north of Shiprock. It is very desolate, beautiful but stark.

The age was listed as late thirties in the original version of the story from The Journal that I linked to above. I see that they have since revised the article and that the age information has been removed.

The first link shows the distance between Shiprock and Red Valley. The second link states the the brother was found near the Arizona state line. Either way not all that far...
