I'm guessing that the Christmas tree and ornaments were the boxes that were stacked on top of the crib to keep the little girl from getting out. If that's the case, it just makes it all the more sad.

I think one of the press reports I read said his GF "worked alongside" him. (Sorry, I don't have a link right now.) Of course, it's possible that was just a poor choice of words or oversimplification by the reporter.
