I think there are two main reasons there is so much conflicting information:
1) The news media is sometimes misreporting. For instance, the only mention of this being a shooting was one report by Channel 15. The only thing close to official word on cause of death was the accidentally leaked...

They were asked about this specifically during the second meeting - "How did they know 1:00am, was it on camera?" The answer was kind of coy, as I recall, the implication was that it was on camera but they wouldn't come out and say it explicitly.
During the last community meeting they emphasized a couple of times that they had physical evidence that would conclusively identify - or rule out - any suspect as the perpetrator. They didn't say what evidence for some reason, but the obvious assumption is dna.
