I don't know that we know how many sets of keys there are to the car. It's possible that they each had a set, or that they left the keys in the car all the time so the other could just jump in and go. Cars generally come with two sets.

I have not had things shake out that way with plane tickets I have had. If I wanted to cancel or switch flights, there was usually such a big fee to make the change that it was going to cost as much as the ticket itself had.
