Hood Is Recalling Almond Milk That May Contain Real Milk

Almonds don’t lactate, in the famous words of Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Scott Gottlieb — but, at least right now, your almond milk may contain dairy anyway.

Hood has voluntarily recalled almost 150,000 half-gallon containers of refrigerated Almond Breeze vanilla almond milk for fear that they may contain actual milk, the FDA announced Thursday. The beverages have been recalled since they could pose a risk to consumers with serious dairy allergies or sensitivities.
The recalled products were marked with a use-by date of Sept. 2, and were shipped to wholesalers and retailers in 28 states. (See details about the recalled products here.)

Well, call it almond juice. Why call it milk? Could it be that milk is good for most people so they have co opted that? Call it what it is and it is true that almonds do not lactate. It is almond juice or blended almonds. I love almonds and milk but they are nowhere near the same thing.

And it should not be. The coconut milk that you buy, is nothing like the clear fluid that you get out of the centre of the coconut. It is blended with the young flesh of the actual fruit. If you peel an orange an blend it, it is not orange milk. Just because it is somewhat white does not mean that it is milk.
