Officials are notifying 18 neurosurgery patients that they may have been exposed to Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, a serious and incurable neurological disorder at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

The hospital confirmed that on January 18, an operation was performed on a patient with CJD symptoms who later tested positive for the illness. Even though the surgical instruments were sterilized by standard hospital procedures, they should have gone through enhanced sterilization procedures used when there are confirmed or suspected cases of CJD.

Hospital is in big trouble. They should have followed the protocol.

Since the disease is incurable and always fatal, it seems to me that it might be better to not have said anything. A lot of those people are going to worry horribly for nothing and the ones that did get it (if there are any) are going to be no better off whether they know in advance or not.
